Cheers, Steve. The poem is about Angel Hill in Boggart Hole Clough in North Manchester, which is right near where I grew up. The Angel is a bronze statue on a big stone plinth erected in remembrance of the first world war fatalities. I had to try and get all this into a short sonnet and I was advised on this one by Michael Symmons Roberts.

I named them 'hoo ray hens' as a bit of word play
cuz they act like us girls sometimes but would never admit to being as emotional as us.

Liked this - like Winston the lines no balls....when drunk - very good, and so true of so many men I know! :-)

Why My Winstonyness, thank you!
I have noticed it needs so work, chop a bit here n there, its just my tiny lil bedsit, it gets so messy and that Chav boyfriend of mine (who Paul loathes)- he's so lazy once he had his way with me (and scoffed about Paul Blackburn (Jealous you see)) he's out the door, offskie, the little chav.
I end up despising myself I should put him on a sex strike.

Hi Tim,
have read this a few times now and feel a sense of smouldering pride that i have found in folk who live in and are from Liverpool - which i suppose remains a city with identity - i have only to see the vegetable boxes placed by residents on the side streets of Toxteth to have this view reaffirmed...
minor point time - i think that your work is compromised by the nostrils drinking bit...doesn't work for me imho

our bark-rough hands would press the stone
really like the rhythm of this line and the words allow an image that is almost tangible - as i read it, it is as if i can feel the coolness of the surface of the stone

Thanks Chris, much appreciated. One of my more heartfelt pieces, definitely. I'd never thought about l.9 in terms of a personification of clothing. Thanks for pointing that out.

Dare I say? - I was very moved by this, excellent work. I do have one tiny, really small criticism though - nothing emotional - just something that stood out for me .... jeans don't kneel, not unless they're really overdue for a wash anyway.

I welcome any comments or criticisms of my work. Just don't ask me what 'Agnus Mater' is supposed to mean because I'm really not sure. I was drunk when I wrote it. The title is a reference to Agnus Dei - The Lamb of God. I just riffed on the idea of Jesus being a lamb and therefore Mary being a ewe.

Hey Antionio, I like this piece a lot, it has a great flow that forces the reader into bouncing the words around a bit. I like that quality as it slows you down and makes you take greater notice of the theme.

Thanks, this is a bit of a running theme due to some past experiences of mine. I am very into anthropomorphism and my connection with animals and the earth (but I'm not a hippie). This is definitely something you'll continue to see if you keep tuned in. Thanks for commenting!

This really moved me - been there - only with me I'm not so sure the end was natural. It sounds trite just to say this really moved me - but ... it really did and I can't think of anything more I want from a poem like this other than that profound connection.
