Hi M.C
Thanks for your comments on going with the flow. Yes you are right it does refer to Manchester. Although not a native Mancunian the North west has become my adopted home. But I feel that this journey can be quite familiar to any number of people commuting in any conurbation. I have memories of being carried up the escalator by the crowds at Victoria station in London in the rush hour many years ago.

Hi Cynthia,

I can't thank you enough for your comments on 'The Has-Been Poet' and indeed others that you have commented on.

I was blown away by what you said and it means more to me than it probably should.

Perhaps my work is not current enough for some readers but I am drawn to formal stuff and I want to write it in a modern way, knowing only too well that not all will like it.

The fact that you do makes me more than pleased.

Thanks again x

Brendan,
Posh Boys.

Bravo!...what is essentially (an intelligent) rant
which not only criticises, but lays out the reasons...and all in the form of a villanelle!

This is classy criticism (forgive the pun) advising us never to send Cameron for the milk if youre dying for a cup of tea`.

Enjoyed and hope to see more of yours.

Hi Rachel
Thanks for your comments on Brighton beach. Yes I realise on reflection the last line didn't make a great deal of sense. It was more a sense of irony in actually being ready for bed but not wanting to admit it as I was tired.
Glad you liked it

Hello Ray,
Half man Half biscuit are a band from the wirral. They have been around for ages now, and were a massive part of my musical journey. The music is fairly basic, post-punk style but the lyrics are something else. They perfectly detail the monotony of living, the ridiculousness of celebrity culture and are very english! here's some of my favourite lines so you can see what you think;

You never hear of folk getting knocked on the bonce
Although there was a drive-by shouting once

I’m gonna feed our children non-organic food
And with the money saved, take them to the zoo

Did you play in the Garden of Eden?
Were the goalkeeper’s gloves to you tossed?
‘Cos it seems to me you’re the reason
You’re the reason why Paradise lost

although the line i instantly thought of when i read your piece was, somewhat bizarrely...

I want to perch myself halfway up a metal staircase with the Polydor girls and talk about meerkats

I dont do them much justice, but they really are fab!

I want to read all your work, but not today. Duty calls. I've been too long at the keyboard already.

What do you teach?

You have a fine face; a man of the sun with a great smile. Presuming the photo is of yourself, but who knows? Regardless, it's a good image to accompany your work.

Thank you Stu for reading Emotion and your comments. My take on this was that just occasionally you have to pull the shutter of emotion down so that you can deal with a situation that needs to be dealt with or alternatively adopt a Paddington Bear hard stare!

Thanks MC for your appreciation. I was struggling in those early days with song copies, as I had a limited repertoire apart from classical stuff (off limits). this taught me to improvise . I was definitely invisible, but your experience is very relevant and it is sad so few examples of that art remain, however tawdry. The East End was full of singers and old music hall songs. Great!!

Hi Harry,

Thank you for all your supportive comments on my work.

I gave a lot of thought to your comment on 'Wrapped In Paper'. I have edited the line that you mentioned.

I have substituted 'deafened' for 'haunted'

The line now reads

'If the words had come to life
You would have beeen haunted by their screams'

Any better?

Helen :)

Greetings, Ali. You are definitely on the right track to consider writing. And, IMO, a musical background is a real asset because the rightly chosen words make melody in the mind, in any genre. I believe you will hear this silent music. And nothing beats a jazz twist to the expected. Bone up on vocabulary, and always keep a thesaurus at your elbow. Oh- and read a lot, all arenas and eras of literature, not because you have to, but because you want to.

Welcome to WOL.

HI David I have just read Your Chair and Work Horses and thoroughly enjoyed the easy and thought provoking style of both. Being a furniture restorer (also a musician) I appreciate the affection engendered by old pieces like chairs, particularly Windsors , slightly stern I know, and the line gruff serenity is perfect. A pleasure and sense of confidence comes through them! In Work Horses I love the juxtaposition of past tense and present "I am watching."
