Dave - i'm a woman so of course the devil is a man just as the devil is most likely a woman in your scenarios. Opposite side or darker side of our emotions. Somat like that anyway. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
Nicky - Wow to yourself! I'd be chuffed for you to want to use Kinsella in a project like that and want to see the results too if that's possible please. Yes of course you can. I'd be absolutely delighted. Thankyou.
Antonionioni - thankyou too for your supportive comments.

nice stuff, tone.. shame the last line ran over as it makes the beat a little longer and perhaps is a little out compared to lines 1 to 3

Think the devil could possibly be a 'she' dave, then again, for those who question theology, so could 'God'. We constantly mention 'Mother Nature'. Interesting thought.

wow! have just read this, having a relaxing mooch after finishing working, saved it so i can peruse it tomorrow (hope you don't mind). would like to use Kinsella in one of my teaching sessions. scheduled a project for them to put images and music to poetry to create a mini film, would be amazing to see what they come up with, the imagery is so vivid.x
don't think we have seen the last of Kinsella.

this poem gives me the feeling of a loss of control and disjointedness that makes me quite uneasy. 'semi-detached' sums it up quite well, that line from my personal and subjective viewpoint is the crux of the piece for me.
Like it. Brutal and to the point, but perplex and open for question. A thought provoking one.

Great review, Dave. Thanks for your company. You need to get more practice at putting things up in the dark.
My guest blogging for Apples and Snakes on a website which spawned the My Place or Yours show continues at http://myplaceoryours.org.uk/ My own write up of the show will follow asap.
Meanwhile, I was well-chuffed with this review of my set at Big Chill in trendy indie mag The Fly

Hope to see you soon.

Cynthia, I'm afraid that I have to confess to having been a little mischievous with my comments about the 3am poem. I was trying to test your reaction to some less than positive feedback following your comments in the discussions section.
The whole problem with so many different styles of poetry is that it is certainly almost impossible to balance what is good and what is obviously poor. With the more modern stuff, I think it's more like the emperor's new clothes, like modern art, if you don't get it, it's your problem.
So well done for being honourable, and a big slap for me for being disingenuous.

Hi Cate
Thanks for the comment. I'm presuming chilling is ok?
This came to me after looking into a room used by Age Concern, where all the easy-clean chairs were set out around the wall. One other visitor couldn't bring themselves to go in to the room because of the memories it brought back, visiting her parents.
It just made me think

Don't normally like short structured poetry but would agree that you capture 'fractured motherhood' very well. One I can identify with.

How rude Graham. Surely not everything has to be deep and deeper? I for one chuckled for ages over this. I enjoyed it. I was amused by it. I enjoy going back to read it. So did others. So its not a grand eulogy, or a treatise. But it`s successful in its intentions.

A fascinating ending Janet - and nice to see Kinsella regain that inner calm. I would still like to see her grab a toasting fork and prod the devil up the hairy arse though - but who's to say there won't be a Kinsella parts 7 and 8 - I am sure Rocky managed it. We could perhaps rename it Rocky or Mission Impossible - if I were more of a film buff, I could come up with loads of possibilities.

Lydia it is purely fiction, the Fathers voice but could easily be the Mothers.
Brought up RC Lydia, something always remains.

This was written about 4 years ago when I was in my first relationship... You know the feeling, loved up, happy and looking to the future. It is designed to echo the nursery rhymes of my youth. I don't generally write rhyming poetry, but it seemed appropriate for this one.

This is very powerful, very strong. If it is fiction, it is a fantastic interpretation of the anguish caused by the loss of a child. I find it very interesting that you use a capital letter for the name of God, an athiest, agnostic or general non believer would usually use a small 'g' so this tells me that, although the speaker will "never believe again", they still have some belief in a higher power.
Is this from a mother's perspective? Or a Father's, either way, I think it is excellent!
