Aly, welcome to Write Out Loud, and I hope you find something of what you're looking for here. We're a poetry site specifically, although you're very welcome to post prose here as well. While I can't offer to critique your work as a whole, I can maybe pass across some advice. This is what I think is important:

1) Read as many other writers as you can. When you like something they do, reflect on it, and try to work out how they did it.
2) Avoid writing about abstract concepts too much. Concentrate on describing particular objects and incidents, and maybe by doing so, they will reveal greater truths.

But if what is most important to you at this time, is simply to express your feelings, then go on doing that. Don't worry about whether it's great literature. The main question is, do you feel better after writing it? Maybe that's the most important thing for you at this time. Hope this is of some help. Greg

thanks for the kind comments on 'wide is the gate...' Harry - nice that you picked up on that 'damned' landscape - because the soul at the centre of the piece is equally damned - with work! cheers again

thanks for the kind & supportive comments on 'wide is the gate...' Laura. I wrote it for a com petition on unrhymed couplets, so that suggested the form.
I know what you mean about the supernatural, but the example you quote was meant more as a play on 'inner demons' i.e his shadow had more life and energy than his body. cheers

Oh lord,
you're really too kind. Thank you for reading. :)

I think that being vulnerable is a huge part of all artforms, and most art is humanity clawing its way out. I'm just lucky that words and I have gotten along so far.

writing, like life, can hurt. It can be an uncomfortable admission to yourself and to other people, but usually it's for the better. Steps forward on glass are better than none at all. Or at least that's what I think right now.

Hey there Mr Bastard, sorry it has taken me such a while, but I read through you Ray Charles letters and I wanted to mull them over a bit before getting back to you. I think what I love about your poetry is that you truly open yourself up. When I read your poems I feel that it is a little piece of the inside you that you have put on the page which is a brave thing to do. Because of the truth you show I find it easy to empathise and I can relate your words to my own feelings. They work on me in a similar way to the poetry of Allen Ginsberg, which I hope doesn't sound to pretentious, and I very much enjoyed reading them. I hope you will continue to share your work on WOL as I am greatly interested to see how your work develops.

aye up - thanks for the kind and supportive comments on 'Dexteram Patris' Laura. It's one I've been sitting on and couldn't get the tone quite right - and originally I was concentrating too much on the chair that's set apart - once I got he 'busted' line it clicked into place.
good spot with that full stop - I deliberately spaced those lines like that and then left the chuffing full stop in - aaghhh!
Appreciate your comments as always

Hello Harry. Thank you for your points on Tartan Beret.
As you know I'm not a good changer once done but I always appreciate your point of view. It makes me look at the work a different way.
With me the picture comes complete and leaving anything out would be like an incomplete jigsaw, so there it is.
Thank you for taking the time to put pen to paper though. I really do take your views seriously.

Graham

morning/evening jaqueline

I'm smiling like an idiot that you called Raycharles a 'piece.' If I was pretentious I'd describe it as a satire of found poetry, but it's really literally a personal conversation copied, pasted, and reformatted to make it readable. But it is verbatim: it was a bad night with a good ending.

Sometimes my life feels like somebody's making it up, and when I'm talking to someone my mouth moves like I'm an actor, before I even have a chance to think about what I want to say.

If you want to know more about Raycharles, there are some other things way way way back that I wrote like loveletters before I was on WoL that I imported onto here. They are all named 'Ray Charles' followed by a number. http://writeoutloud.net/public/blogentry.php?blogentryid=45923

Just went over your new pieces. I would love to hear R.A.M. recited -- I, too, suffer the malady of a drifting mind. The problem is finding the surface again, sometimes.

Lady Spodden is simply fantastic -- very well paced and the language is fucking perfect. genuinely, i'm impressed and humbled.
