Thanks for the kind comments on 'The Dark & The Light' Stu - apologies for my slow response - not been on the site much recently. Yes - he was thought to be indestructible - which just goes to show that we are all frail things really. Not sure if it got across the fact that his light was chasing Lemmy's darkness down the road of death - but he was equally iconic and, in some cases, seemed even more invulnerable. A sad week for rock music indeed.

I just realized you added another comment to The Warren House Inn. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I went on a classic rail trip to Buckingham from Kings X in Jan. 63 steam hauled throughout, and believe you me those carriages were freezing! Imagine the moor then - and of course some locos ran backwards with no protection for the enginemen. Ray

Hi Cynthia, thanks for commenting on 'shut up...'
I really like the way you pointed out the three separate ideas/possibilities in it - I think I will work on that at some point (always think I'm going to magically find more time). It's great to hear what others see/ think, particularly if I've written something when caught up in the emotion of it - gives me some distance and another perspective - always a good thing. Hope all is well with you x

Hi Michelle, thanks for reading & commenting on 'shut up...'. I always appreciate your comments, and agree with your observation about religion not being able to accommodate passion (particularly if that passion is expressed by a woman), at least in my experience, which I admit isn't extensive :)

Hi M.C.
I still have memories of the Jacques lossier trio playing that familiar piece of Bach. On high days and holidays I would occasionally switch to king edwards cigars. You are of course right about having a pint with a hamlet, very nice!
i have occasionally trolled through some of the old adverts on you tube. I think my favourites were probably the late Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins in the cinzano ad's

Re. "Smoke Room" - and Hamlet cigars. Not only do I recall
smoking them with a pint but somewhere I have a VHS
tape comprising the collection of the famous TV ads.
My own favourite is the jockey left in the starting stalls...
a ready reckoner for so much that happens - or doesn't - in life!

Hi Stu -
I appreciate your kind affirmation on my profile page.
I came to creative writing late in life after a career
in public service but quickly found it to be a very
worthwhile outlet in both words and music - choosing to
self-finance work where thought useful...with rewarding
results on a personal level that now see a move into
more commercial creative possibilities.
Follow your muse and - as the lyric from the great US
lyricist Johnny (Moon River) Mercer tells us: Accentuate
the positive, Eliminate the negative.
As for criticism, if it offers constructive comment about
incorrect use of spelling, grammar, punctuation and
and perhaps presentation, it is worth heeding. The rest
is subjective and "critics" can often be guided by their
own prejudices when commenting.
Remember - if it works, it works! Upsetting folk can
happen but as long as there is an underlying justification for the content then be prepared to argue your corner
and give your reasons. Rational debate is the hallmark
of any open civilised mind.
Best wishes on WOL.
MC

Hi MC, thanks for your comment on 'Shut up..' - I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. As for ensuring a woman (or a man, for that matter) is content, I really believe only the person themselves can do so, it's not up to anyone else. I wonder, too, if contentment is the goal. For me, at least at the moment, I think the goal is finding the courage to voice my experience/ thoughts etc.
Thanks again.

Hi Ray - thanks for the comment on my Leningrad poem.
I did see the programme you mentioned and some of the
views brought back some memories. I still have a guide
to the city somewhere - bought whilst there. What its
citizens had to endure during those terrible siege days
doesn't bear thinking about. But I guess that "stoicism"
is a trait in the Russian personality and it was never more
necessary than then and there, not helped by Stalin's
reported indifference (and worse) towards the city and its
inhabitants.

Stu, Vicki is right.
To me poetry allows me to break some rules that mainstream writers would perhaps scorn.
Use spellcheck if you can, accept critique without being churlish but never feel that you have to change your work because of it.
Makeup some words if they sound right (I do) it all adds to the mix.
Just get writing and chase the Muse

Hi Stu - I don't feel I can offer advice as I'm still learning myself (& honestly struggle too sometimes!) but all I can do is tell you how I do things! I don't think spelling is important & if you're worried use a spellcheck (I do!) likewise with grammer - I try to write as I want the reader to read it. I've liked the pieces you've already posted - I think you have a good style. It's a brave thing that us creative types do - we bare our souls. Not everyone will like your words but if you own them wholeheartedly then what else matters!! Keep going - Vic xx

I'll add these comments to the blog 'Rich Pictures' too - as it may prompt more discussion.
As you say - it's a tough one to describe images that the reader can't see, which is why I love the opportunity on WOL to include an image with the words - not always necessary - but it can help understanding.
This piece is part of a collaboration between the photographer (Richard Nixon) and 3 poets - myself, Laura Taylor and John Togher. We are using (Mainly) black and white source photographs that strike a chord with each os us individually. In the main we are being either descriptive or relaying how the image makes us feel.
This poem was my attempt to capture what the whole experience meant to me - and the thing that strikes me about Richard's pictures are the way he manipulates light with organic and inorganic subject matter - and his use of 'soft' shapes and 'hard' lines and angles. Because of this there will be some conflict in my own use of language, because it encompasses the whole, rather than any one image (Hope that makes sense).
For anyone interested, type the words 'Richpix' in the tag search field and all the pieces we have done so far should magically appear. That may give a better idea as to why summarising the whole project this way throws up conflicting imagery in the words (I hope).
Thanks for the kind comments - I appreciate it as always
Ian
