Mortality

entry picture

Mortality stalks me
like a jealous lover.

Breathlessly follows me
wherever I go, incessantly
banging a gong,

chanting,

it won't be long,
come to me, let
the pain end.

My eternal soul sees
this game of mortal gods

and challenges me

to go where mortals
fear to tread...

Meditate in silent space
past the black hole,

beyond illness,
depression, despair

to that mystical place
filled with stars
that live forever

because they dared
to shine their light
in a dark world.

This is great! I've been wanting to write something similar, I've got the title but the words haven't quite come yet. Seems like you've beaten me to it. Nice work.

Thank you Dorothy! I keep playing with the last few stanzas. Sometimes a poem never feels finished, which is probably a good thing on the subject of mortality!

Thanks Don. I love the way line breaks affects the rhythm of a poem.

Vautaw. I'm an experimenter. I like people who try new things. I like the 'pause-absorb, then carry on' approach. Chanting' does just this. Separated in it's own line it makes you pause, absorb the 'chanting' idea before carrying on. Mixed up in a line with everything else it would get lost.
