The Local Pond

Morning walks by the local pond
are always something to behold
The busy birds chatter away
so many stories to be told

In a multitude of blended tones
they sing their songs loud and proud
A choir of tweeting voices
a cheerful harmonious crowd

Ducks line up on the waters edge
set to take their morning paddle
Sights and sounds from the local pond
so simple, yet quite beautiful

I Wish I Was A Fish

I wish I was a fish
living in the Turkish sea
Not a care in the world
swimming around wild and free

With no need to worry
nothing to cause anxiousness
Facing each brand new day
without concern or distress

My time would be my own
with no deadlines to be met
No financial concerns
with no fear of loss or debt

I wouldn’t feel the cold
and I’d always be well fed
Thanks...

August Morning

As if through an invisible prism
sunlight bathes the morning in golden rays
Late summer changes may be coming
but for now we have these wonderful days

Turkish Rain

It’s raining here in Turkey
causing chaos on this August day
Frantic market stall holders
race to move their goods out of harms way

The giant tarpaulin sunshades
gather the torrential summer rain
Dragged down by the weight
sagging and swelling under the strain

With much prodding and jabbing
waterfalls cascade onto the floor
Apart from a misjudged nudge
catching me with a dousin...

Moody Skies

A nice long walk this morning
under moody threatening skies
Sunlight clashing with the grey
creates a dazzling surprise

The sea is calm and peaceful
lightning flashes across the sky
The weather is humid and close
as distant thunder rumbles by

A brief shower of warm rain
sprinkles the land, flowers and trees
Now there’s a freshness in the air
sweet scent carries on the breez...

30th Wedding Anniversary

Time flies when you’re  having fun
it feels like only yesterday
Where have all those years gone
some of the quotes we often say

Today we say them all again
as we look back on our life
A quiet celebration
thirty years as man and wife

Thinking about that day
remembering our wedding vows
This is how I would sum up
our marriage until now

For better not worse
many good times,...

August Sunrise

Reflected in still waters
this late August sunrise
Black silhouetted trees
creamy orange blue skies

Daytime creatures just stirring
to greet the brand new day
Nocturnal ones return home
to sleep the day away

Insignificant

In a blue summer sky
a whisper of white
In the midnight hour
a flash of starlight

In a winter blizzard
a flake of snow
In a wild hurricane
a puff and blow

In a tropical storm
a drop of rain
In a rock salt mountain
a single grain

In the fields of green
a blade of grass
In a shattered mirror
a shard of glass

In a volcanic burst
a speck of dust
In an ancient shipwr...

The Puzzle (rehashed)

Take a stunning photograph
an impressive and picturesque scene
Alpine snow capped mountains
the prettiest sunset you've ever seen

Paint a stunning work of art
an ocean every shade of blue
Capture a rolling landscape
hills, fields and trees, a famous view

Select your favourite picture
cut into shapes, a thousand parts
Place each one back in a box
this is when the real magic star...

Magic Wand

The cost of living crisis
escalates out of control
Life as we know it
disappearing into a black hole

As we prepare ourselves
for the cold, dark winter nights
We switch off the central heating
the tv and the lights

There’s far too many people
now living in fear and dread
Consumed by stress and worry
despairing at what lies ahead

No one wants to go to work
just to pay ene...

The MPs Big Bro Show

I have come up with an idea
for a new TV show
Put all the MP’s in a house
let’s call it The Big Bro

We will give them an allowance
for rent, food and bills
Just enough to get by
without any luxuries and frills

Then, just for a little bit of fun
we double all their fees
Let them experience what it’s like
to feel the pinch and squeeze

It would be interesting to see
what sol...

Never Let Your Rainbow Fade (rehashed)

A rainbow appears
when there is sun and rain
The weather’s equivalent
of joy and pain

An arc of colour
created by reflection of light
This optical illusion
gifts us a magical sight

As the rain subsides
the rainbow fades away
The sun breaks through
revealing a brighter day

Soak up the sunshine
sing and dance in the rain
Relish moments of joy
push through the pain

Let the...

Dinner Time

Relaxing in the garden
disturbed by a rustling sound
On hearing a commotion
our eyes turn to the ground

Well disguised and camouflaged
we spot his brown speckled chest
Stood sturdy, silent and still
pinning down his latest quest

A young sparrow is his prey
he’s dining in style tonight
Noticing our presence
he swiftly takes off in flight

Cost Of Existing Crisis

Everyone needs more money
to pay for their fuel each day
Employees want more money
they strike to demand more pay

Employers face a problem
they need to pay their staff more
So they increase the pay rates
and see their running costs soar

Companies left with no choice
they need to hike up prices
Forced to pass on these costs
to cover the pay rises

The employees are happy
no...

RIP Dame Olivia Newton John

She radiated elegance
dazzling rays of love and light
Her talents widely acclaimed
a superstar that shone so bright

A brave and generous woman
who did so much for charity
She fought her long cancer battle
with such courage and dignity

An icon of music and film
the sweetheart of a generation
Forever young in our hearts
her legacy a true inspiration

Who Knew?

Why do rabbits jump and leap
I looked up on Google today
It’s because they are so happy
was the reply that came my way

A jump with a twist in the air
apparently is a binky
A sign of pure joy and happiness
and very amusing to me

Pure Gold

Sunrise over fields of hay
bathes the land in a warm glow
Gold spilling down from the sky
pours over the world below

Early risers drink it in
this splendid start to the day
A stunning August morning
nature’s artwork on display

Silver Lining

Fifty shades of heavy clouds
drift slowly across the sky
The threat of rain, imminent
no chance of it staying dry

There is a silver lining
a bright, luminescent streak
There won’t be a hosepipe ban planned
for Cumbria this week

Comparisons Made

Comparing two of my poems
one from last year, one from this week
Football matches is the theme
but the similarities are weak

One tells a sorry tale
of sadness, disappointment and dismay
The second is for the lionesses
and the match played on Sunday

Last year the Mens Euros result
achieved the worst kind of news
How three young fooball players
had been subjects of racial abuse

Pride Of England

A jam packed Wembley Stadium
buoyant sea of red and white
Filled with families, young and old
made a warm and welcome sight

What a refreshing change it was
to see this respectful crowd
No booing to be silenced
by cheers that echoed loud and proud

The men promised to bring it home
for fifty six years they tried
The women got bored of waiting
and took the challenge in their st...
