Nuttin & Sumpin

you can make sumpin

out of nuttin

or nuttin out of

sumpin

but you cannot make

nuttin BE sumpin

you have to have

sumpin

to start with.

-O.L. Buzzerd

(most of my poems amount to nuttin.)

Instruction Manual

I came with no instructions

nothing to indicate how I work

or how to make me work

it was anybody's guess

as to what my true purpose was

or what function I fulfilled

so that's where my wife came in

she figured out soon enough

how to make me work

and has been persistent

in her calling ever since

all commend her for her diligence

in taking on an impossible...

MANKIND

Why do they call us Mankind

isn't that a misnomer

an oxymoron

we are definitely Not kind

in any sense of the word

our wars

our words

our mean Tweets

say the opposite

our unkindness toward each other

makes little sense

yet it persists through the ages

making a mockery of kindness

we are the bad examples

of our kind.

Internet Service

When you die

and go to heaven

will people still

E-mail you

or send you tweets

and memes

surely there is

good internet service

with good connections

it's in the clouds

with the best provider

of all.

That Song

A catchy song

stays with you for the day

always in the back of your mind

it replays itself

ad infinitum

you can hear it

the notes the words

the familiar chorus

repeated over and over

as the mind rewinds

like a tape played back

until finally it ends

when you shut it off

by pulling the plug

called sleep

tomorrow a new song

will substitute

to si...

When One Door Closes

When one door closes

another door closes

until all doors are shut

and we are safe within ourselves

safe from new ideas

safe from open discussion

behind walls we grow

fat and comfortable

we think we are always right

better than others

we shut ourselves off

we develop pride and prejudices

and fall into a dark hole of hate

it's best to leave at least one do...

DIRT

To get your hands in it

to feel its texture

to smell its smell

to touch

to run it through your fingers

to move it around

to dig

to plant

to tamp it down

to know that you have made

a pact with it

to make a living thing

an ancient contract

this ritual relationship

between man and dirt

a miracle is waiting

life ready to eme...

LICHEN

Moss on a rock

emerald green

soft to the touch

a painted scene

It multiplies

overnight it seems

Lichen does best

where sun's not seen.

Between The Cracks

When it rains for a week

weeds come out

between the cracks

on all the sidewalks and street medians

a mini-forest of green suddenly erupts

as dandelions push up

spiny thistles emerge

and wild clover blankets the concrete

persistent resilient weeds

take over everything until

the city crew comes along

with their weed-eaters

and blasts them into smithereens

Dead Battery

I am all-electric,

wired and ready

charging across America

except I have to stop

every 200 miles to recharge

when my battery goes down

or the wind doesn't blow

then the stations only sell

gas and super sized sodas

no place to plug in

need a longer extension cord

so I limp in on a dead battery

order a pizza to go

might as well eat

it's a long way hom...

Building A Nest

How does a bird

build a nest

it has no hands

and no plans

no engineering degree

no architectural acumen

how then does it manage

to build a nest

one twig at a time

balanced on a limb

in the wind

a natural wonder

a remarkable skill

I look up to birds

and wonder how

I can't even build

a sandwich.

My Brother's Keeper

There are so many social programs

and billions spent

yet people still live in litter

in makeshift shelters

in Walmart tents

eventually the handouts will end

we will all be broke

then we will all be in the same boat

living under bridges

sleeping on cardboard

diving in dumpsters

the only thing is

there will be no more shopping carts

and no more free lunch

...

Fast Food & Phones

The way it used to be

Families at the table

enjoying conversation

enjoying each other's company

Now it's all fast food and phones

conversation replaced

by plastic plates and plastic phones

people not looking up

constantly staring at a screen

Families are not the same

without those meals together

save a place at the table

save our families

save our ...

WOK

A wok

will work

on quite

a lot

but wok's

on foot

hurt if

you drop

word to

the wise

can cause

blood clot

wok can be

replaced

but you

cannot.

MONEY

Money's harder to get

than it is to dispose

It buys us possessions

even love I suppose

How quickly it leaves us

with empty billfolds

Money is fleeting

it comes and it goes.

BAREFOOT

The feel of grass

between your toes

so soft to walk

when feet exposed

to the feel of grass

we would propose

it's heavenly

God only knows.

SMOKE

Absence make fingers

grow rusty

like anything else

you get out of practice

have to restart the fire

but the flint won't spark

ideas are all wet

the kindling won't catch

and poems produce nothing

but smoke.

MUSTANGS

The wild mustang

could not be tamed

fire in their eyes

wind in their manes

Drum of their hooves

across the plains

thundering herds

'cross wild domain

Their majesty

will never wane

although their world

has gone away

In history

there still remains

the glory days of

wild mustangs.

Childproofing A Poem

To childproof a  poem

read the tiny directions

take out all the bad words

take out all the blood & guts

take out any praise of our past

take out any offensive material

take out any hidden meaning

now set the poem nicely on a high shelf

and screw down the child-proof cap

you should be set to go

your poem is now sanitized and

ready for consumption

but like an...

University Of Stupidity

Well it happened

the universal fear

I washed my phone in the washing machine

it was a stupid mistake

I left it in my pant pocket

when I threw the pants in the washer

the phone sloshed around for a good 20 minutes

now I have the cleanest phone in town but

it won't work

it just sits there like a rock

a dead thing

it wont light up, it won't turn on,

it won't r...

High Volume

Due to Covid

we are experiencing

a high volume of calls

and so it may take a while

to get to you

please stay on the line

so that we may assist you

the average wait time is

two days

some callers have expired

while waiting but

that was not Our fault

they had weak systems

if you would like to leave

a call back number

good luck

we never call back

Old Crow

An old black bird

hops among the cars

in the parking lot

one leg tucked in

a pirate without peg

maneuvering among the tires

and scrambling for scraps

it does the best it can

with that one good leg

yet even in its crippled state

its eyes still have that fire

that haughty look

so sure of itself

it knows it is still the smartest bird

with an eye toward m...

Morning Moon

Just a sliver of a moon
like an earring in the sky
hung up there
by a passing God
who thought
it would look pretty
a poem pinned up there
upon the page of
the morning sky
reminding people
of his light
and goodness.

Short Poem

Time is always running out

and all the things

I mean to write

never see the light of day

life gets in the way of poetry

so I write shorter and shorter poems

that don't take a lot of time

you should be grateful.

The Little Things I Do

The purpose of my life

is annoying my wife

it's the little things I do

that seem to

always irritate

I put in no effort to

She says I'll be

the death of her

in fact that may be true

but then again

she loves me for

the little things I do.

Not As Young As We Used To Be

There comes a time

to recognize

to see what others see

so long in tooth
our strength we lose

not as young as we used to be

on top of that

our mind goes numb

dumbed down capacity

awake to find

old bones remind

not as young as we used to be.

Cowboy Blues

The range is gone

the cows are too

now citified

our options few,

So what's a poor cowboy

supposed to do

when his job is gone

and the land is too

The ranch is gone

sold off for lots

developers came

then homes popped up,

Now all we see is

malls and shops

the pasture paved

with parking lots

There used to be beauty

far as the eye could ...
