The Return of Rainbows

ARTWORK:  Acrylic on wood by FMF © 2003.

Looking back through my poetry written in 2000: 'The Return of Rainbows’ was conceived at University as a mature-age student bloodied by life’s battles and as always, finding succor in words. My seemingly audacious presence provided lots of fodder to explore the constant challenges and effects of that experience on my life.

Vacuuming

Another one from my 'Sketching in Ireland' while Exploring Possibilities manuscript.

Vacuuming

With every pull toward your body

you expect obedience.

Expect each tiny micron of dirt

to be sucked up and away –

captured.  Tied

neatly in a disposable bag

then tossed out with the rubbish.

Controlled.  Dealt with, put out.

Never mind – away – forget.

You Glow

You glow

with love for me.

Accepting all I give,

never questioning if I love.

I don’t.

TEARS FALL

Tears fall

like rivers of

pain. Rejection will hurt.

Just touch him and say goodbye to

Did You Know...?

This one's from my 1968 Notebook - actually written in 1970. I was 20 and into Astrology. Did you know? Did you know that Cancer was compatible with Virgo? No? Well, it is. So now, you should take notice of me. You’re so tall you have to bend to come through the door. I’m so small I have to jump to reach the top shelf. Funny, hey, that I should fancy you ...

Closing Doors

An old one - from Uni days (1999), before my Irish lover sent flowers and changed my life, forever.

DOORS CLOSING

How often has the door closed on opportunity for me?
And how many times have I shut it?

‘Well, open it again.’ You say. Not so easy
when it is wedged with prejudice.

Locked with lies about your femininity
and jammed with judicial errors.

I am an opportunist and I do b...

Depression

And when the depression takes its toll

I look at the star just above my head,

tears rolling down my cheeks  ,

With hope in this heavy heart ,

wishing you are looking out for me ,

Telling me in your loving voice

that it's gonna be over soon

I can stop fighting ,

lay down my weapons

Demons going to the far land

I sleep peacefully laying head in your lap

March 2026 Collage Poem: Drunk on the Poetry

Footsteps tread a deadly underworld,

My name is Melissa; dark syllabic wine my

            addiction of choice

Lyrical ecstasy exploding emotions

On a wet dark night the pyjama poets

circle and talk of death to all men

You can never be truly free, unless

Last time I went to Middlewood way, we got stuck

As the first one fell,

As the second one fell,

Eager to conjure up the words

You didn't meet me in the rain.

I miss when looking at a photo of you
felt like butterflies,
not a blade in my stomach.

No one had ever expanded their image of me

my favourite walk.

I fell foolishly,
clinging to your aloof endearments,
mistaking distance for depth.

But for What.

Eyes open to see but for what?

Four blank walls and weighted lids and

The same old places as when we were kids

Only the weather changes their faces

From grey to green and the footpath traces

The same familiar routes

The mud that covers my boots

Is dry but not scrubbed away

They’ll just get dirty again anyway

It is no sight at all.

The Merchant

The merchant rises before the dawn

And sees the darkness fading

For another day of trading

An existence so degrading

In its repetitious gloom

The grinding shift, its end so far

Into the strand and down the hall

Boiling,
steaming,

water can burn

Frozen,

solid as a saint’s promise,
water can chill

water can cleanse

Flooding,

water can wreck

Withered Out

Hands move without mind

The time slips by in silence that is mine

I just try to find a sign

That says this way or that.

Motion drifts without body

Unrecognisable though still resembling

The fiery spark that’s dwindled

And waiting to be rekindled now or later.

Heart beats without soul

Too cold to move from scolding mould

That’s festered in the folds of me
