STREETLAMP DREAMS

entry picture

Footsteps hurry through the dark street

As amber glow spills onto the wet road.

Lovers stroll by hand in hand

I dream of their whispered words

Reaching the soul.

Their footsteps echo, sharp then fading away.

Rain falls again, blurring the scene.

A stray cat slinks through the darkness.

A dog barks in the distance, a lonely sound.

The wind sighs a creak through the wires overhead

And I dream of the secrets the night keeps hidden.

A burst of laughter spills from a nearby doorway.

A window opens, then closes again.

A taxi's glare fleets by as

The scent of rain lingers in the cool air.

I buzz, dreaming of the fleeting moments

Of human connection.

Grey touches the horizon.

Hours have passed

In my loneliness.

The city wakes from its sleep, stretching

As delivery trucks begin their early rumble.

I dream of the ordinary miracles

Of a new day unfolding.

Fixed in my metal frame

I stand and watch, all day.

A silent keeper of the urban quiet

A constant in the shifting dark.

And still I dream, reflecting stories

In a restless beam.

Thank you for sharing that memory Uilleam. It really brings that sense of passing time and the subtle wonders we often take for granted to life.

Stephen, I agree. There's a unique magic to that transition.
I find the contrast between the stillness of darkness and the stirring of the city so powerful.
Thank you!

"...ordinary miracles" we take so much for granted in the everday.
I remember the old gas lamps, still standing in the 50's, one of which stood outside our house, being then replaced by the sodium lamps which gave off that "amber glow" you mention.

There is something special about the rhythm of the darkness and then the awakening of a city in the early morning. A very fine poem, Naomi.
