What's an app? - don't give me that.
I bet you are using the flat cap app for Yorkshire folks.
Nice to meet up with you at the Tudor.

Hello J.C. - I will backtrack slightly on the
historical conception of "Englishness" now that
I see that Athelstan is given credit for being
the first king of what is accepted as the first
"unified" Kingdom (in the mid-10th century).
I take your point about the paradox of the German(ic|) and French connections. They say
though that William the Conk was of Viking
origins...they seemed to be inveterate Euro -immigrants: with axes to overcome objections!
But the Cornish would probably lay claim to
being the "originals". Judging by their
antipathy towards their Devon neighbours,
they still feel that way! But "English" is
an official ethnicity now so we have as much
right to shout "racism" as anyone else -
backed up by a thousand years of well documented in-fighting and in-breeding. As for
so-called "xenophobia" - ask the Cornish about the Devonians...and the Yorkies about those Lancastrians (etc. etc.) I smile whenever
recent immigrants complain about how they are
treated. They would be wise to study our history for the explanation.

Hello MC. Thanks for your thoughts on "Everybody's Gone Serfin'". If you read the O'Farrell book you'll see just how much of mine was original (not much!).
I will agree that the concept of England and English would have been embyonic at best in 1066.
It seems strange the current English xonophobes would side with the "Germans" rather than the "French". Of course, they were no more German or French than we are "English". I imagine my own DNA to be quite basely prostituted!

Thanks for your comments on "Everyody's Gone Serfin'", Greg. I am more than indebted to the John O'Farrell book. I'm not so sure it will oust The Pogues "Fairytale of New York" as the best Christmas song ever, but at least I rival Shane McGowan as a singer!

Profile pictures are taking a while longer to load for some reason. I've had the same problem. I've also found that I can't load any pictures that have been cropped or edited after they've been taken. Don't know if that is unique to me. I think it has to be Jpeg format as well.

Sorry - realise that you were addressing your comment to Winston, but I'm a meddler and I've got a better arse than him...

It never occured that you could get over to the Wirral- I thought Wigan was a trek.

We'd love to have you as a guest poet though!

We don't have an event in December
(we do have a party- your invited
9th December).

Thinking about weather and travel- what month would be best? Feb/March?

Your comment re: Hey'up is very much appreciated.
I'm not the greatest 'performance' poet, but I have the feeling it might be a good one to perform - maybe after 4 pints?
The 'poets with their prissy prose' bit was something I thought I'd put in as a sort of poets in-joke.

Thanks again for the time you took to read the poem, and the comment

Both Myself and Stella Jones are delighted at the response to our 'Poets Corner' event at 'Glassfire' in (Sunny) Hoylake , Wirral (right by Hoylake Station)...
On Tuesday night we had around 40 people attend with 20 Poets reading and it is only our 2nd month!!
Poets travelled from Bolton (Rachel Bond)....
and Wigan (Elaine Booth- Guest Poet) Isobel Malinowski and Joy France and with my co-host Stella Jones it made Poets Corner an even more elegant evening...and the Poems were great as well!!
Elaine judged both Hara Willow (Hoylake Poet) and a newcomer - Steve Smith to be joint winners!
Although I know Elaine said it was a very close run thing!..Thanks to both Elaine and all poets...Graham

I Am delighted at being judged the winning Poet 2011 at last months 'Wirral Ode Show' at The Stork Hotel in Price Street, Birkenhead...it is a great honour!
Thanks to Jason T Richardson..Mo and Dave Costello for a great night..I think all the poets had a great time!...I certainly did!
All the best to Mo who is taking over the show from Jason...am sure it will continue to be a great venue for all poets to go and 'strut their stuff'....

Dear Elaine,
thank you for your kind comments and I have re-read 'Old World ' and now find myself totally drawn into it. I used to live in Berlin , near the Wall, and once when the seasons were turning in the park ,Tiergarten, where there were ruined embassies untouched since 1945, experienced a moment such as your poem captures .Your craft recalls me to that moment ,painfully unconfessed imaginings.Oh regrets, I have a few!
Would like a re-read of your closing piece , if poss. stephensmithster@gmail.com

I have,hopefully,
better explained my reply to you
in my poem 'Hypocrite'
if you would be so kind as to read.

the previous comments

this being due to having just arrived home

my brain seems to have got back

thanks love.
