Thanks for your comments Greg. I like the first line, but it has no connection really apart from to imagine how cold it would be so defrocked! The last line sort of Xmasy but a big stretch of credibility!

Hi Cynthia Glad you liked 'The Teatime Bulletin'. The first draft was written some time late 70s/early 80s and I was thinking of updating it. In the end I thought there was no point. The names and places changed but the story stays the same.

Hello Stu, thanks for your comment on The Turn. I'm outdoors a lot and the weather/climate exits for me in a very real sense - which might sound daft, but i'm sure you know what i mean.
I'll keep checking in and having a shufty at your stuff. Keep it coming.
Trav.

Hi Andy
Thanks for your comments on 'Not from round here' It is based on an event that happened to me as a student walking back to the car loaded with books as opposed to just loaded! He was quite insistent that I came form London and was happy when I agreed. Hope to see you next week.

Hi Stu
Thanks for you comments on 'Not from here' this is related to an event that happened to me a few years ago as a student I was walking back to the car from the university library loaded with books. He was quite insistent that I was from London !

Hi Tommy, I am starting to wonder why I bothered coming back. The site is riddled with 'poets' who do nothing but critisize the work of other poets!!!
There is nothing I hate more than people who think they are better than everyone!
If I disappear again, you'll know why!

I guess I'm just a little shy (believe it or not!)
The "disobedient" reference is to do with the technical style of writing, in that I do free verse mostly and I'm not a stickler for "obedient" verse as it's known in the more academic/elite circles. I believe the love of language, and the expression and entertainment of it is enough to make it poetry.
I love Moon Month BTW, it's very powerful and an original take on being "on the blob" : )

Thanks Helen, much appreciated. Time is a struggle and I do feel guilty that I do not read as much I write on this site. I do intend to rectify this. With that said, I have read some of your work. I do not make comments on peoples technical ability as I have no concept of what is and isn't right.... (I've just google stanza but don't tell anyone ;)). I just write and that's it. So I am not qualified or experienced enough to make sweeping comments on anyone else's work. I either like it or I don't and I like your work very much x

Hi, Katy, - just curious - why are you shy about anal intercourse?
I'm not really sure what 'disobedient barriers' you think you are are breaching. Or whom you think you would offend. But I may be the one outside the accepted pale, and not realizing it yet.
I never once considered my 'Moon Month' to be anything but honest, certainly not offensive to anyone. I may still be very naive.

Hi Harry Glad you liked my 'Funerals'. I've had versions of that poem knocking around for thirty years and it's been published in in magazines and a book. Still, it's always bugged me and, although it's not exactly a magnum opus, I took a scalpel to it and hope that I've now sorted it out!

Hey, thanks for the comments on Wednesday's Child. I didn't have any maternal instinct at all. Didn't want kids, didn't like kids. But then I had a couple and luckily (for them) the instinct kicked in!
I love funny poems, especially ones that are written by women. I have tried my hand at a few myself. I always try and start with a funny one at open mic before I leave the room suicidal with the deeper ones :) My only problem is that I get incredibly embarrassed if people laugh at my jokes, which leaves me with a 'riddy' as it's known in Scotland.
Think I might need to purchase your book, anything to give me break from myself ;)

I really like your poems, Helen. I have absolutely not a jot of maternal instinct nor any understanding of being a mother but Wednesday's Child was very strong for me.
(p.s. don't worry I'm not a mother, I'd leave them on the bus)

Hi Cynthia, thanks for the read and the comments :) My line breaks follow my thoughts which meander and can be chaotic, coming back to the original idea after a bit. I am not a huge fan of anything organized: religion, rhyme or lifestyle. Recently in a shopping mall in Dubai, I saw this kid claw the carpet, refusing to get up on being denied a phone. The mother couldn't get him off, so the reference to the spoon and child, or should I, at the risk of being politically incorrect, say a spoiled brat ;)

your poem trips off the tongue nicely Ash but stumbles in places and perhaps loses momentum towards the end. I like the shampoo line but I'd split it like this:
'and when you lay your head on my shoulder
all I smell is your coconut shampoo'
and similarly:
'and randomly wake up just to say
are you alright?'
- separation helps to highlight the important words.
I would be tempted to end:
'and you brought me light
I never knew existed'
which leaves the poem slightly open-ended. Just my opinion of course. Good luck.

Thanks M.C.for your fulsome comments on 'can poetry lift the spirit', which expressed a very exact commendation on the art; it certainly would not do if everyone had the skill for then there would be no requirement for it I feel.

Hi Stu, thanks for taking the time to read my poems and comment. I am surprised 'voices' only took you a morning, but that is proof that good poetry sometimes happens because poetry is in you. Not all poetry has to burn out of you as Bukowski might say.
Michelle :)
