Hi everyone! Just to send apologies as I won't be at WOL this evening - so much going on, I really do need a rest tonight! Also Maggie asked me to send her apologies, too, as she isn't too well at the moment...
Have a great evening!

Just coming back on your comments on Shut Down Stu.
I very much appreciate the spirit of your thoughts. I had an idea and fleshed it out quite quickly - the idea of a factory closing and taking its time and its toll, then thought how similar this was to a body doing the same. I suppose this all comes with experience of life as you say. Very pleased that you should appreciate what I am doing and I wouldn't say it was rash - honest yes. I was pleased with the last line, it seems to me that desperate people invest imagined hope in close ones, perhaps.

Thanks again, Ray

Hi Scottydotti,
I am very sorry for your loss and can completely sympathise. The loss of a parent removes a piece of your heart and can blacken your soul if you let it.
I lost my mum very suddenly December 2014 and it still affects me all the time.
My uncle died about 7 weeks ago and I wrot this to show support and care for my auntie who lives far away.
I am pleased to help you start writing again. I promise that it really can help.
Nice to share with you.

Thanks for your comments on "The Beach", I will certainly consider them. I was conscious of perhaps too much alliteration, and in fact already tinkered on a line or two where it was definitely too much before I posted this! I will have a look at the 'small words'.

'Tea with Anushka' is terrific.

I think you are an accomplished pragmatist with a soaring apogee of sensitivity, a bottomless pit of sensibility and an eye for the telling particular. Life experience embraced with self-pride does that.

Not to mention your command of language and literary structure.I totally agree with your comment about poetry being 'meaty', the mental drive to weigh each word for its value to the whole.

Your kids must find you amazing.

Hi Sarah

Your comments on Fatty McL are most welcome.
The poem is about 80% truth. It happened to my friend nearly 45 years ago. I don't know whether he's proud or ashamed, but there has to be something in the fact of the wee man overcoming the bullies, no matter how

The love of writing poetry will be a great joy to you.

I wanted to say thanks for your liking 1977 - I tried to convey the feeling of the time and how we inherit things and watch them disappear in a cloud of memory. I respect your work so much, and reading in particular your Poem of the Week gave me much pleasure with its rapier wit and probing sense of fun.

Hello there - and welcome back on WOL.
Your recollections are not only entertaining but important
in an age when so much can quickly be forgotten or
disregarded - lost to those younger interested souls
who would like to know about such things from those
who knew them firsthand. After marrying for a second
time following the premature death of my father from TB in the late 1940s, my mother developed what I now
call "gypsy feet". It seemed that after about a year
in any place she'd be looking for an excuse to move and
I reckon that happened around 20 times in as many years
...so I had quite a bit of experience of living in a variety
of homes - pre-central heating and boiler days! But the
art of lighting a coal fire became second nature, as did
rubbing the ice from the inside of a bathroom window!
Keep posting.

Ray, thanks as ever for your patience and your positive words. 'Victory Hill' was initially intended to be a more overtly political piece. I was going to touch on social welfare, the NHS and the decline I foresee in both as we travel into an uncertain future. In the end I went for something a bit more over-arching. Those on the lower part of the 'hill' represent an ignorant youth and a new kind of overclass I see developing. Meanwhile, the older, wiser lot at the top are looking back and pondering over how it all went wrong...

People who write traditional rhyming poetry always feel they have to apologise for it. I apologise all the time. Someone once told me reading my longer narrative poems was like reading a Rupert Bear book, though I think it was meant as a compliment! Don't apologise. Rhyme adds to the flow and requires a particular writing skill. I like your poetry.
