Can We Pretend

Can we pretend
     social media highlights
     are every day life.

Can we pretend
     children aren't starving,
     neglected or abused.

Can we pretend
     Mother Earth will
     pardon our plundering.

Can we pretend
     animals don’t suffer
     for our gluttonous pleasure.

Can we pretend
     greed doesn't
     fuel disease.

Can we pretend
     God is real and
     loneliness isn’t.

Can we pretend
     addiction doesn’t
     destroy families.

Can we pretend
     a kiss makes
     the hurt go away.

Can we pretend
     Superman saves the day
     hand-in-hand with Lois Lane.

Can we pretend
     everything will
     be ok.

Can we pretend
     we will remain friends regardless
of religion or the shade of our skin.

Can we pretend
     hate never existed and
     love never ends.

Can we pretend
older people
don't need to talk
about what wonderful things
they did when were younger

to keep on pretending

Suggestions from a lowly poet (but not sure if I have them the right way round)

Can we pretend
the planet is not there to satisfy
our every whim and fancy

or

Can we pretend
the planet is not there
for our taking

To which the reply comes back, wake up Don, of course it exists for our every whim and fancy. O course it's riches are there for the plundering, er taking. What would you know? You're just a poet.....Didn't God give us the planet to grow, develop and do what's necessary?......

You plunder my being
Much more than you need
Show some restraint
Just stop all your greed

and the earth sighed...

I want to include a line about the environment, but nothing is revealing itself to me at the moment. Feel free to add to the poem if you are inspired to do so!

Only for a little while before the cold hard truth steps in. No we can't pretend.
Excellent words.

Thanks Ruth! What a privilege to share time and space with the legendary Freddie Mercury. Did you see Bohemian Rhapsody? It made me fall in love with Queen all over again!
