J.C. Re. "Their Finest Hour".
I seem to recall that the WW2 Italian fleet suffered a similar fate (at Taranto?) but then
they were with Hitler then...before they saw
sense and went back to being the delightful,
pragmatic people we know and love.
As always...

Perhaps more 'pagan' than not, in the generally accepted sense. But, for me, 'pagan' is a non-word, like 'heathen'. I no longer recognise 'sacred' and 'secular' except as deliberately divisive propaganda. Many years ago, I seriously thought of being a minister in the Protestant Christian genre, and did indeed work within the 'church' for a very long time. I found that most ministers with in-depth scriptural knowledge, and vital enthusiasm, were virtually strangled at the pulpit by their congregations' limited 'acceptance' of Biblical scholarship. My heart literally wept for their necessity to temper, or even deny, their spiritual insights. I now go my own way entirely. I think I have made more friends than enemies; but, who knows.

Dad always insisted on a male dog. (Not kidding.) He actually fathered five girls, but one died. My parents had to give up on the 'boy' thing. We did grow up with no sexual division of labour - the idea of boys' work and girls' work is anathema to me even now: WORK WAS WORK and that was the end of it. Such upbringing still affects me wholly.

Hi, Win
I think my mind is a regular deserter of my corporeal being - I'm forever losing it!
However on the occasions when it condesends to favour me with its presence I do like your poems. XX

Hi Chris,

Belated thanks for you comments / analytical thesis on my poem 'Fizz Bomb'. Glad you liked. Very interesting to see the poem described in your terms. A lot of my poems slide into a quatrain format, I wonder why 4 seems a comfortable number of lines. 4 doesn't seem like a very natural number to me? The main way in which this poem changed in its re writing is the addition of the last line of each stanza which seems to work well and as both you and Harry point out has a long vowel at most ends (Which I hadn't realised I had done!). It is a love poem of sorts, childhood love or love of a child, maybe? I think I will leave school teacher but have changed a typo and the selotape line to make more contextual sense. Thx again. Win x

OK Lynn - I shall dismount from my trusty steed
and park it against my WOL wall! But please do
understand that I totally agree with your views
about errant bike-riders...I see too many of them when I go out and about and there really is NO excuse for some of their antics. I have
described them as "pedestrians on wheels" as
proper cyclists behave properly!
Safe moorings!!

Hi MC - have to say I enjoyed all the ripostes to my poem, but I decided against posting another riposte as no one wants it to go on forever!
But if any good has come out of it, I now walk on the left of the towpath and allow loads of room for cyclists coming up behind. :))
The main problem with mooring a boat, though, is that you actually need the whole width of a towpath to moor it, so I would only ask that cyclists remember this. (By the way, it was others who were apoplectic, not me! haha.)
As for your little ditty about cyclists wanting highways and byways, I would be completely all for it!!

hi , i love your poem MY WISHES, it is very much my style, the short stanzas and monosyllabic lexis creates a snappy and straight to the point poem. the paralinguistic form places good emphasis on the differences of WANTS, WISHES and NEEDS, and many of my poems also use this paralinguistic style.

Hi Gus,

You know I love the poems and prose of your childhood, as always beautifully observed- not something remotely easy to achieve.

In terms of poetry and venues, it is just people being precious and egos, it'll all die down eventually.

What I would say is we'd love to see you and hear your poety at the 'Wirral Ode Show' or 'ThePoetry Spoke', the latter of which is on tomorrow night (see blogs).

My Best

Chris

Yvonne: Thanks for your comment on my quintet. The reality is we've learned too well how to hold on to status quo and not well enough how to move forward to include other value systems that respect all human stories. William Faulkner said it this way, "The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past."
