Biography

Julian co-founded Write Out Loud with Dave Morgan in 2003 and, with his son Michael, created this website the following year. He has been a successful performance poet, coming second in several slams and joint first in the International Women’s Festival Slam, bizarrely. He has appeared at gigs across the UK and in France, and is an experienced compere having organised many open-mic and similar events, including the North West heat of the BBC Radio 4 slam. He wrote the script for the short film, To The Sea Again, which played at several film festivals and was a finalist at the Angel film festival in London and Moondance in Hollywood. The film was produced and directed by Mark Jordon of Joepop: http://www.joepopproductions.com/ Julian also had a script (co-written with Alison Chaplin) under consideration by Yorkshire Television, but which eventually did not get produced, sadly. Julian has a background as a teacher and lecturer at all levels: infant, junior, comprehensive, FE and HE; a lifetime of experience as a workshop facilitator, trainer of facilitators and teachers, organisational consultant and management coach. He has produced teaching and training packs for a range of organisations including radio and TV, winning the Cooperative media award for his part in BBC's Roadshow guide to rights and the law, for young people. He was at one time minorities editor of Basic Education journal produced by National Extension College. He has worked in ladies’ clothing, been a lorry driver, an encyclopaedia salesman, a teacher and lecturer in England and France. As well as running Write Out Loud Julian leads creative writing and scriptwriting workshops for festivals, libraries and others, and has interviewed Jimmy McGovern and David Nobbs live on stage. He has run several poetry events in Bordeaux and surrounding areas and translated French poetry into English. He runs a small publishing company, Blooming Media, which produces user-friendly publications and corporate video for health and education. He wrote user-friendly guides for young parents and for parents of teenagers. In his spare time he sleeps; sometimes.

Julian, I have a question. My POTW for Nov. 20, 2016, has been withdrawn. Is there a reason for that, like I didn't get the info material back in essay form, or on time? I sent what I thought was required - somewhere - God knows where. I'm not on line even weekly, consistently, and I got rattled when I discovered my poem was chosen. It's just odd, having that 'blank'. Especially as I don't know why.

I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone. If I ever mean to offend on purpose, it will be very clear. But not likely to ever happen.

Genuinely interested.

.. Hi Julian .. thankyou for your comment on 'Tourdion' .. yes I remember one evening at the 'Sweet Green Tavern' listening to Hovis Presley when a chap shuffled in and sat near the door with a pint , I assumed he was a customer come to listen when you asked him to do something and he recited a long profound poem while rolling a cig' .. this of course was John Jelly, I had a chat with him at closing before leaving .. then suddenly he and Hovis had passed away .. great loss ....

Hi Julian

I was so looking forward to visiting Marsden today, and had some work ready to read (must have got the performance bug last year!). However, I have been battling with a heavy cold for three days now, pretty unsuccessfully, and don't feel well enough to attend.
However, I had to smile this morning as I saw the reading on my perpetual calendar: Ecclesiastes 3 v 7 -
"There is a time to keep silence and a time to speak". That is the absolute truth; the Lord really does have a sense of humour....
Have a great time today!
Love, Dorinda x

Thanks for your comment Julian. It was a fantastic night. We were expecting it to be a little low key as only a handful turned up but it turned into a night of laughter, fun and excellent poetry, excellently delivered. The "Ringers" was the first place I ever dared read my poetry, so I have a great affection for the evening anyway. Hopefully there will be many more of those "special" evenings to come.
Cheers

I'm hooked! Re" Translations -What a great idea! Check Souhad's poem - I've made an effort, a difficult job but challenging. and I do love a challenge. Knowing she has a PHD in English is pretty daunting, but grammar and syntax don't always make poetry. See what you think. Above all, be brutally honest.

Cheers. Thank you for the review. I am so honoured.

''here' being where? ;o)

Subversive act? Or revolutionary act?
Are you trying to effect some kind of deceit here, Tommy?
referring to what Julian?

Thank you Julian - what a really lovely thing to say. Thank you for Write Out Loud! I've been getting chucked out of pubs for years for this kind of thing, and now I do it on stage instead ;) Should have taken this up years ago :D

That last comment you made about Suhad isn't showing up on any poem Julian - it seems to be lost in the system.

Julian, I'm sure I know the name, Geraldine Monk. You are currently casting a very wide net. BTW, I am included in BOMPoets 3, and I'm very pleased - 'The Dreamfooter' - one of my personal favorites. I haven't said anything to anybody else.

many thanks for your thoughts on "Progress and The Diggy Box".
Yes, the aerial dance around the room was important. Our neighbour had a slot telly where you had to put shillings in.
(It's interesting that evryone who comments does so on the telly, not about the Diggy Box).

Hello Julian,
Thankyou for trying to help with Yvonne Brunton's Profile page and the link you sent.
As Isobel says, I can't access this. I just get directed to the Main profiles page, and when I search those Profiles Yvonne's doesn't show.
I think MC Newberry is the same (I asked him to contact her for me).
If it could be resolved I would be ever so grateful as I feel rather impolite collecting "accolades" from Yvonne for my various masterpieces and not being able to acknowledge her.
(Plus at my age I can ill-afford to lose lady contacts!)
