Thanks for your thoughts on "Filey", Ian. The first time we went there in the in-law's caravan some 30 years ago, we decided to go the week after Easter. We thought it would be packed for Easter week. When we got there it was shut.

thanks for your kind comments on 'in the belly of the whale' rachel - i'm so pleased that you picked up on the title - which just dropped into my mind as i wrote it ( the original title was to be 'the lonely call of mankind' but i was so pleased when a lightbulb went on and that title surfaced (whoops, mixed metaphor there - but you know what I mean). I love your 52 hertz effort as well by the way - very image rich and loving the quasi-religious angle to it. I love poetry that tells a story in a more oblique way, using image and suggestion rather than direct reporting - and yours ticks all the right boxes on that score - well done :-)

thanks for commenting on 'in the belly of the whale' isobel - i'm quite pleased with it as there are a lot of subtle references in there - including the title. I was interested in the discussion going on at the moment about forced deadlines and topics - I love the challenge - and as your conceptual intro was already fully formed i thought i'd go for a less obvious slant on it. no doubt this would dissapoint whale lovers everywhere :-)

thanks once again for your comments on 'noticed' Yvonne - I'm glad you like the 'flag' words earlier in the poem - I had an exchange of views with Harry on this - I wrote them in early because this man lived like a ghost when he was alive - he was a ghost when he died. So you got it spot on regarding what I intended. Very perceptive as always :-)

Thanks for your comments on Lonely Whale Alex. It's probably one of my more thoughtful pieces - the theme is an inspiring one for me - I think the feeling that you are on different wave lengths to the rest of the world is probably quite a common one.

Glad to hear you were there to cheer the boys home. It clashed with just about everything for me - and I can't bear the logistics of large crowds!

Take care. x

I think yours is both entertaining and moving. Good job I keep up with the news from England! I just noticed you have a poem called Tiramisu. As I'm in Italy, I'm going to read that next.

Hello Isobel,
Glad you liked "Your First Hut is the Cheapest".
I'm not much cop at "whole songs" because I'm not very melodically minded. The words come quite easily but I struggle with original tunes.
I did co-write a "serious" one for our village school which the kids do several times a year at various occasions (which is quite pleasing).

thanks for the comments and suggestions on 'noticed' Harry. The use of those 'eerie' words early on were deliberate, as I wanted to get across that this guy has lived the life of a ghost while he was alive - and wasn't noticed - it was only when he died that he became 'real'. You are, as usual, very perceptive and I totally get the idea that I could have built more tension at the end of the poem by using more neutral words early on and saving the sinister for later - so I guess I got caught between two stools of trying to get an eerie pay off against trying to get a subtle characterisation.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment
much appreciated

The child within is too easily lost. We forget how to simply accept and tend to over analyse our lives.
Listen to a distant sound of thunder
and imagine ......
I love my grandchildren.
Josh, the little boy in the pic shouted to me, "Look grandad I'm catching the rain!"
What could I say? ... NOTHING !! ....So I stepped outside, into his world and tried to catch the rain.
Thank you for reading and commenting.

Cheers for the comments on The Writing Class, MC; allusions to Betjeman muchly appreciated too - I'm beginning to think that structured, formal verse is most definitely frowned on by today's poetic community (someone recently commented that no rhymed poetry stands a chance of winning comps or being published) so comparison with someone of his stature stands as no small compliment.
