Howdy Cynth
Ta for your note on the library piece. Nah, I did try to reduce it to a jus of a poem, but tbh there were so many things I wanted to cry about that in the end I just vomited it all up, and that's how it'll stay I'm afraid.
I still find it quite painful so I'm not keen on revisiting it either!
Ha - love your story :) and the plan! Mine was just to read everything in the library :D

Thanks again Cynthia for your recent comments. I've not actually been writing much poetry of late and it's surprising just how quickly the 'writing joints' stiffen.
Would be great if you can make it to the next Tudor night too.

Many happy returns - personal and poetical!
Briefly returning to your "gate" poem - it also
brought to mind the Tennyson poem about
"Crossing The Bar" - an additional reason for
liking it.

Hello M.C .. thank-you .. it's my b'day shortly, and 'beyond the gate' suddenly dropped into my mind .. let's not dwell on it M.C . The clock and all the relevant atoms are fading away.
4th Nov. yes I looked at Mr Tennyson .. I was at sea for five years so crossed a few bars .. everything links together ..

Many thanks for your comments on Schizophrenic on a Mission, I appreciate it. The piece is in fact autobiographical, the facts of the poem actually occurred nearly twenty years ago, after a vendetta I had against a company I worked for.I thought it would be interesting to write about it as a poetry piece. I've also included a piece about a day in a psych ward, which is in fact an older piece.
Thanks for your compliments it's encouraging to get feedback.
Cheers Dean

Hello Greg .. I'm really pleased about your Thomas Hardy comment because all I knew of him was The Woodlanders from school,so I searched his wife's death and found the poems. Curiously I see Woodlanders was written 1887 the year my gr. gr. gr'mother Ellen died in Oldham .. it took me months to find her grave because there was a mistake on the death cert'.I 'googled' 'beyond the gate' and the first thing is a place who help alcoholics ! .. it's all very odd.

Hi Cynthia I'm glad you liked the sniper poem. It's been a real struggle to write. Maybe becaue I don't usually respond to something as immediate as a news item. Still. it really is hard to get inside the heads of such people. How on earth do they reach such a pitch of callousness and contempt?

Howdy Steve :)
Good - I am delighted that WOL has inspired you! Oh, and I only joined this site 3 years ago, had written ONE piece before that, and never ever really paid any mind to poetry. Never read it, wasn't into it.
When I first joined, my profile simply said 'Performed nowhere, published nowhere'.
I wouldn't say I was an expert, no, but what I HAVE done is just simply wanted to keep writing, to see what I could do, to keep trying different things. Some of my earlier poems were quite good, but most were pants :D
It is only ever YOU that makes the difference between continuing and improving, both writing AND performing, and not being arsed about it enough to do that.
Keep writing, and keep trying! I've enjoyed a few of your pieces, as you know. You've more to come, I'm certain of it.
Performing is terrifying. There's no two ways about it. I still SHIT myself beforehand, and convince myself no one will want to hear my 'pathetic crap'. Practice x 10000000 - it may be terrifying, but if you can touch people, and you hear that applause, the buzz is HUGE :D
Very best of wishes to you Steve and I look forward to reading more by you :)

Hi laura,
Thanks for reading 'if you don't like the record' I have to admit that this site has inspired me to have a go (some day) at actually performing my stuff. Clearly, reading your profile you're a bit of an expert. Pity I can't take my own advice but one day . .

Hi Cynthia,
Thanks for looking in on 'if you don't like the record' I chose that title because it was the first line I wrote and everything else came later. Slow down is good though and perhaps more appropriate, certainly for me as the advice given in the poem is advice I could never take (as much as I might want to . .)

Many thanks M.C. on your comments on the poem Top 10-Non movers. I began to get into music in the early eighties with the new wave scene. Bands like the Specials, Police and Madness where I then progressed into rock and metal music. But I also appreciate music from the sixties-The Big Four, stones etc. I even like some of todays music Adele etc. I just feel that today with MTV etc that chart music today has become formulaic and stale relying on looks and glamour rather than raw talent. And as for Rap and Hip Hop music,it has progressed from a brute force which was incisive as the punk era into a formulaic splurge of singing about cliched lifestyles, style but no substance.
I agree with you variety is important enjoying music ranging from Adele right up to Napalm Death.
Cheers for your comments
Dean

Thanks for the comment about "The Political Poet".
I had commented on the work of certain WOL
contributors insofar that I sought to show there
were differing points of view to a stance taken
by them - and found myself consigned to the
category of "troll" and told to remove myself
from their sight (or words to that effect).
My short poem was a response to an attitude
that brooked no argument or alternative point
of view...clearly only interested in approbation and applause for a pre-set POV.
I enlarged upon that later in another short poem that finishes...
See the open hand reach out,
A closed hand is a fist.
The open mind makes room for doubt,
A closed mind will resist.

.. howdo and thanks for the comment. The poem was more disjointed to reflect a 15 month girl in her first shoes, but tidied it up a bit .. I see you list 'Jeffarama'. Barrie thought Marksy was the Alpaca-thingy but then realised he did not look bright enough to master a keyboard. And now I'm stuck with addressing myself as "Barrie" when I prefer "Mr S". Wo' Evah! I was much taken with the line: "Wished I hadn't bothered sometimes." Unfortunately coupling couples break the First Law: "No conception without representation." Scroll on. Might you photoshop a sign on the Rama Llama Dingdong? "I'M NOT MARKSY." It will help the old folk.

You just have to blog this Barrie - then tag it with 'touch and go' for Dave's Comp. Maybe we two can start an avalanche - sometimes all you need is the touch of a feather to do that... there I go again, giving someone an idea!

Thanks for your comment on Wondering, Barrie. There's nothing lonelier than a star strewn sky - it makes you realise just how insignificant you are - for me, it puts man right in his place.
The only way to deal with that knowledge is to write poems like 'Touch and Go' instead :))
The title is the theme Dave Bradley set for our latest internal comp. I'm hoping more people start writing to it - it would be good to see a serious poem as well.
If you can write a poem that makes me think differently about the stars, I'll be impressed - even more so if it has the words touch and go in it! xx
