Hello everyone! - I could do with some help, please! - tried to enter the Women's Anthology comp entitled "Furies" (shown on Write Out Loud site), but all I could find was the bit for payment - could not find a submissions form! I was quite disappointed as I had tailored two entries specifically for this comp! If any of you 'hi-tech guys' can help, I'd be very grateful!
Yours in puzzlement........Dorinda x
ps: do be patient with me: I will be 70 this year - senility gallops on at an alarming rate!

Hi Helen. I'm pretty new to this site but I'd like to say how much I enjoy your work.
"And who
is banging her hooves together?
Like windchimes
in dirty light
who lops the brick,
startles the foals? –
scattering stars around a farmhouse."
This particular passage creates such a great mind visual.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for commenting again, Laura. I suppose the follow-up to in and out should be 'shake it all about', but I think I'll pass on that.

Thanks Harry - the whole thing rests on the idea of liminality. There was a moment when she was walking away into her new place, waving at me, and then I turned to my right and my dad was walking very slowly (with a stick) to the car, and me in the middle - it was very much a moment of threshold, of liminality. Dawn is liminal, a flame is liminal - just seemed to fall together once I'd focussed on that.

cheers Laura - re 'Fracking' - must say, like most people, I don't know enough about the technical stuff to know how much harm and upset fracking is going to cause - but I don't know how syphilis works either - I just know I don't want it :-). I'm having a go at a few 'form' poems over next week or so - but a cinquain was new to me - so thought I'd give it a go

Hello Lynn - thanks for your reply on my profile
page.
I was astounded to read the other day that-as of
May 2013-there was a figure of 2.49 million
claiming ESA/or old-style incapacity benefit.
What country of any small size/population can
afford that?
"Disablement" needs the most rigorous yet fair
assessment. What might be a disablement for one
job might not restrict employment in another -
especially interchange between physical and mental work.
As I recall, the introduction of the system was
a right-minded policy to alleviate hardship
in the short term, not provide an entitlement
life-style. Abuse of the original concept has
now brought the latter into being - which cannot
be good for either self respect or productive human effort in the cause of national well-
being.
Having said that, the onus is on any government
to make a system easily understood and just as
easily applied. There can be NO excuse for
confusion or complications when dealing with
people's well-being OR the nation/s collective
purse. It is NO place for jobsworths seeking
to "play" the administration of public payments
and give deserving cases the run-around and
increase their difficulties.

No worries Harry. It would be intriguing to see where it goes next. I appreciate the straightforward, 'building blocks' approach to play-writing rather than crowding everything with context. The more ambiguity the more the audience has to think about, always a good thing!

Dominic, thanks for commenting on Surbiton Lagoon, which has legendary status on Facebook these days. Other lidos survived - Tooting Bec, Guildford, Hampton - but Surbiton's did not. Shame on the royal borough of Kingston-upon-Thames. Talking of Kingston, I hope to be at Rhythm & Muse this coming Thursday. Maybe see you there?

Hi MC, thanks for your comment on my profile, many apologies for not answering this sooner, I have only just noticed it. Yes, I do understand your views, and I agree there are some people like you describe. However, the other side of the coin is that many have paid into the system for years on end, and then they become disabled, only to have Atos tell them they are fit for work, and their benefits stop completely while they await tribunals. It is not fair that many people who cannot find work are having their money stopped altogether for between a month and three months due to unfair procedures at the DWP.
Anyway, respect for your story, MC.

My comments on things you have posted deserve
some "background".
My mother was widowed in 1949, leaving her with a
small army pension and a handful of children.
She somehow got by doing various jobs including
a school matron and working in a dress shop.
I left school aged barely 16 to travel 100 miles
to start apprentice work in the nation's capital
when the average weekly wage was a tenner and the
idea of "a thousand a year" was almost beyond
dreams. I worked until my retirement in a
risky shift-work environment - and now, in
retirement, I still pay tax...enough per month to
keep a person in food for a similar period by my reckoning! I am in favour of temporary help
via "benefits" for emergencies, the deserving old
& disabled but I have reservations about a system
that has allowed a culture of "entitlement" to
other folk's money to grow and prosper to the
extent that what was scrounging has become almost
sociably respectable and the idea that "God helps those who help themselves" has virtually vanished
from modern thinking. Pardon me if I want to
look very closely at anyone's claim for other
folk's money before giving it the "green light".
Include the young, the alien and the never-
employed in that assessment. I would, however,
approve a claim for a bike - for agreed use in travelling beyond the home comfort zone so many
never seem willing to leave!
Regards

Hello John
It's so nice to hear from you . Your reference to my insistence on three..'cames' was for a feeling of emptiness, I was endeavouring to find atmosphere, echo and repetition in addition to a smouldering ravishing beneath the greenwood. Oooh ...whoops.. just felt the urge, the temptation to utilise yet another .....oh well it 'Came' and went.
Meanwhile John, I have no doubt you will keep up your good works...and look forward madly to seeing you soon.
lots of love and best wishes .

Hi Cynthia,
Thank you again for you appreciation of my work - it is really touching and inspiring to me. I feel I am splitting my voice at the moment - been writing a lot of stuff to send to competitions, magazine publications etc. which I am trying to be brave enough to allow a more personal stance with the reader, but am also still keen to explore word sounds and the architecture of this in more abstract work too.
Will we see you at Sale WOL next Tuesday? I will be reading and it would be lovely to hear you again.
Take care,
Marianne x
