HI David I have just read Your Chair and Work Horses and thoroughly enjoyed the easy and thought provoking style of both. Being a furniture restorer (also a musician) I appreciate the affection engendered by old pieces like chairs, particularly Windsors , slightly stern I know, and the line gruff serenity is perfect. A pleasure and sense of confidence comes through them! In Work Horses I love the juxtaposition of past tense and present "I am watching."

This event I did my poem about was only given out to members just two days before it happened so it was kept top secret for these serious sexy swingers!

See you Monday

Yes thanks I was aware, but I fancied reading at the "official" poetry event first. Plus I need to pluck up the courage.

Susan,

Sorry I missed your latest addition Beck (Stanza Stones) when you first posted it.

I like the concept of water and its cycle, providing growth and life before returning to its source, but I have to pick you up on a couple of things:

If water were 'common' currency, as opposed to rare, the grass would not be parched. Perhaps valued currency would be more apt unless the common you refer to is the land itself.

Salty bullets and pearl necklaces conjure up images I'm not sure you intended and will have some people sniggering!

Please take my comments in the way of constructive criticism as I enjoy your words immensely.

Thanks for the kind welcome. Yes it is such an interesting place, the perfect subject matter. Is there is copy of the poem published or on here so I could have another read? I missed the last poetry session at the phoenix centre but I hear there is to be another in October hopefully I'll have something to read for then.

Hi Matthew, welcome to Write Out Loud. Yes, I guess that was the night the Pyrford TV Arts crew were there. The poem is called 'A Foreign Wood', and, yes, it is mine. I composed it last year, just before a Remembrance reading in Woking town centre that the Phoenix organised, and I took part in with another local poet, Sarah Williams. Both Sarah and I were at the Phoenix on Monday night, as it happens. I didn't want them to think I only turn up when a TV crew is there! I've always thought of the Muslim burial ground, out there in the woods, as a rather eerie place, but I think that will change once the Islamic garden within it is open. I had a peek the other day and it is virtually finished.

Hi Greg I saw you read at the Phoenix Centre in Woking a little while back and meant to speak with you then but I was playing music and got distracted. I wanted to discuss one of the poems you read. I cant remember the name of it but it was to do with the Muslim war graves, was it your own work?
Thanks Matthew

Hi Stu, thanks for taking the time to read my poems and comment. I am surprised 'voices' only took you a morning, but that is proof that good poetry sometimes happens because poetry is in you. Not all poetry has to burn out of you as Bukowski might say.

Hi Cynthia Glad you liked 'The Teatime Bulletin'. The first draft was written some time late 70s/early 80s and I was thinking of updating it. In the end I thought there was no point. The names and places changed but the story stays the same.

Thanks for your comments on 'Not from round here' It is based on an event that happened to me as a student walking back to the car loaded with books as opposed to just loaded! He was quite insistent that I came form London and was happy when I agreed. Hope to see you next week.

Hi Tommy, I am starting to wonder why I bothered coming back. The site is riddled with 'poets' who do nothing but critisize the work of other poets!!!

There is nothing I hate more than people who think they are better than everyone!

If I disappear again, you'll know why!

I guess I'm just a little shy (believe it or not!)

The "disobedient" reference is to do with the technical style of writing, in that I do free verse mostly and I'm not a stickler for "obedient" verse as it's known in the more academic/elite circles. I believe the love of language, and the expression and entertainment of it is enough to make it poetry.

I love Moon Month BTW, it's very powerful and an original take on being "on the blob" : )

Thanks Helen, much appreciated. Time is a struggle and I do feel guilty that I do not read as much I write on this site. I do intend to rectify this. With that said, I have read some of your work. I do not make comments on peoples technical ability as I have no concept of what is and isn't right.... (I've just google stanza but don't tell anyone ;)). I just write and that's it. So I am not qualified or experienced enough to make sweeping comments on anyone else's work. I either like it or I don't and I like your work very much x

Hi, Katy, - just curious - why are you shy about anal intercourse?

I'm not really sure what 'disobedient barriers' you think you are are breaching. Or whom you think you would offend. But I may be the one outside the accepted pale, and not realizing it yet.

I never once considered my 'Moon Month' to be anything but honest, certainly not offensive to anyone. I may still be very naive.

Hi Harry Glad you liked my 'Funerals'. I've had versions of that poem knocking around for thirty years and it's been published in in magazines and a book. Still, it's always bugged me and, although it's not exactly a magnum opus, I took a scalpel to it and hope that I've now sorted it out!
