Hi Cynthia - thanks again for reading and contributing. I feel confident in all of what I have written, and I totally understand your note of caution. Direct experience and observation of preceding years, plus that which is in the public domain already, is the basis of that confidence. Thanks again though :)
Good day's debating!

Hi Cynthia,'O Sweet Confusion' I think your friend's suggestion has some merit. Read as set out below: your poem could be said to have greater thrust.
'Wisdom is not chronological. One wasp hidden in the gentle petals makes all the blossoms suspect and much joy is lost'.

The plan was to have my theatre piece alongside the poetry at 8pm, but with the riots one of my actresses and my sound engineer are out of action and we're rescheduling the theatre piece from the end of September instead now.
Guests from both days are of course free entry both tonight at half 6 and tomorrow.
For 10 pounds a membership card for future events is included, and originally it would have included a free screening of my play as part of the event.
Instead we're going to give the option of £7 for the evening of poetry and the membership card for future discounts or £10 with free entry to the shows in late September/early October on 29th, 30th, and 1st October.

I see there is a 10Pound charge. I'm presuming this would be just for my husband, and not for me as a guest reader. What do you get for this charge, besides excellent poetry, of course?

I know some areas in the Northern Quarter were attacked, but I'm not sure about Dale Street since the area near the train station was all cordoned off.
I'll be ringing An Outlet first thing tomorrow morning to confirm whether it's safe and will let you know the outcome.
If there was no damage then we're still holding the festival since shops were all open today and I'm not letting a few thugs ruin what we've been planning for months.
With love,
Indigo.

Hi Cynthia,'One wasp hidden in the gentle petals makes all the blossoms suspect and much joy is lost'
I would argue that this final stanza comes across more powerfully as a proverb because of its pithiness and wisdom of observation plus expression.
If it is a metaphor as well although I cannot see it as such, it may be of lesser metaphorical significance IOM.
That said, I would like to see it argued in other opinions as it is an interesting point. xx

Pleased you like The Scourge of God Dave.
I tried a different format with an internal (lines 1 and 3) rhyme, but unrhymed outer (2 and 4). Still with a heavy trochaic rhythm.
I do have an interest in all things historic, so I don't suppose Attila will be my last; but no set subjects as yet.
(I do find the very readable and funny An Utterly Impartial History of Britain by John O'Farrell inspirational).
Once again, thanks for commenting.

Alternatively, if it's less trouble (all that damming rivers etc) I'd settle for a Viking send-off. Funeral pyre pushed into the River Aire, floating downstream, archer lets fly a fire arrow and WHOOSH! Up I go.
You must have seen The Vikings with Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas?

I was part of a gig last night John and I performed one of your poems; it went down so well that they asked for an encore, I won’t tell you what the poem was but I said “I’m not doing it twice.” When you said you didn’t mind me doing your stuff, you also stated that if any pint pots where thrown the poem was not yours; on the other hand you instructed that if I was showered with money then the proceeds should go to the man who holds the copyright.
I was last on and finished at 11.pm. At the eleventh hour the throwing of
Pint pots or money had not been undertaken; instead they just threw Knickers and bras. The question is what do you want me to do with them, should l I keep them or send them of to you. Before you answer John I must point out that; that is the last
Stag Do I shall ever perform at.
Cheers mate. Tommy Mc.

Hello again Cynthia. Can I thank you for taking the time to comment on Apparition, and for the very generous comments.
As always you make some very constructive comments for which I am grateful.
I hardly ever qualify my work but only one thing I feel needs an explanation.
The poem formed the part of a collection about Angling. When one fishes into the late evening, the light changes imperceptibly, that is to say, you don't notice it until it has. Whilst I understand your comment and am happy for your observation, a fisherman would similarly understand mine.
Many thanks once again,
Graham

When I say entertaining, I don't mean in a ha ha ha way - I mean in an enjoyable read way. I like poetry that I can understand - I like the way you looked back at the experience of a child, through an adult's eyes - I just connected with it. There is so much poetry that you have to bash over the head with a shovel to get the meaning from it. Sometimes it is nice just to read an experience expressed in a wry and amusing way. I didn't pick up on the plagiarism allusion. I just thought you were likening yourself to someone base and I liked the biblical allusion.
Yes poetry from our youth can seem naive. We are hopefully improving all the time. I cringe now at poetry I wrote 5 years ago.
