Cynthia....apologies (I forgot to look up my profile) The political thing was on the home page (Julian)

I`m puzzled at the paucity of self criticism in what today passes as political poetry (what there is of it)

Also...the poor? What constitutes poverty in these days of wall to wall cars lining terraced streets? Why (exactly) are people poor these days?...Did the actions of the social security scroungers have no effect on the recent credit crunch troubles? So much of the poverty rhetoric these days is so dated.

I appreciate that your own efforts are more philosophical than political...but in all spheres man is a political animal.

I think the politic thing as now also on the discussion section.

Sorry for the delay.

Thank you Cynthia - you're an angel and your comment means a lot. I've worked on that one for ages and just couldn't get it poetic enough. I reached a stage where I binned it or posted it. The emotions and feelings in it were important to me though as it's a poem I've always wanted to write. I wish I could have done it better justice. Your comment really hit the mark xx

Cynthia, Lovely to hear your voice the other day. I think there's been a bit of a mix up. I got a message from Stanley first. It wasn't a very clear recording but I gathered it was soemthing to do with a new email address possibly? Kiss something? Does that ring a bell. Anyhow I didn't get chance to reply and then got your voicemail. I am not aware that I rang at all but may have caught the rign back button perhaps - I'd always leave a message althogh I tend to text mainly. Anyway, hope you are both well. It woudl be lovelyy to see you again sometime soon. XXX

'lo Cynth :)

Astute? Moi? Don't get called that very often! ;D

Re my right knuckles - it's 'make'. I found a tube of orange dayglo paint at a festie in July and went a bit mad with it. The 'borstal dots' first, then a smiley face on my face, and then got all inspired cos you see a lot of 'love' and 'hate' homemade tattoos on a certain generation of men, so after long inebriated thought, I went with 'make' and 'love' :D

Then I forgot about it and didn't let it dry so it smeared everywhere, doh!

Heh - glad it's not just me who ends up tearing their hair out sometimes on damned words.

You're confusing the issue Cynthia...unless otherwise stated-(as in +1 or -1)1+1 always equals 2, as I qualified in my remark re 'dialectics'. Re 'the egg'. You are confusing a simple statement of fact with the qualifier of morality- I said: 'If I take an egg and crush it in my hand- it is an event- indisputable- and only becomes a matter for 'dispute' when a sentient being 'intervenes''. Murder is also an event and is covered by my initial statement.

Hi Cynthia, thanks for the continued comments. Because each word was treated separately (Cut and pasted if you like) I don't think this piece says anything about football. Maybe that Mr McCarra uses a colourful vocabulary to report it but no more. His match reports would not sit comfortably in a red top for these reasons and this is partly why I like them. Win x

Hi Cynthia, Re; NON-PAYING PASSENGER. Thank you for commenting and I tweaked the final line as you suggested.

The first line 'Dopey as ...' was simply an expression I often use to describe daft things and had no bearing whatsoever on any particular sexual act. Of course one has to be guarded in this day and age.

Thank you for taking the time to read and review "Fences".

It is a relationship that ultimately is not meant to be, even though there's love between them. Maybe you have to experience it to make sense of it. There are some obstacles that just can't be overcome - like if one wants children and the other doesn't. Hiding in denial, and being afraid that communicating will bring about the end of the relationship so they avoid comunication, are what the fences are made of...denial and fear.

I appreciate that you consider it well-written.

Thanks again,
Lisa

I don't fancy the burial party's end, but the river-bed thing I fancy. Or maybe Viking style - pushed out into the River Aire on a raft, archer with a fire-arrow, then KABOOSH.

The plan was to have my theatre piece alongside the poetry at 8pm, but with the riots one of my actresses and my sound engineer are out of action and we're rescheduling the theatre piece from the end of September instead now.

Guests from both days are of course free entry both tonight at half 6 and tomorrow.

For 10 pounds a membership card for future events is included, and originally it would have included a free screening of my play as part of the event.

Instead we're going to give the option of £7 for the evening of poetry and the membership card for future discounts or £10 with free entry to the shows in late September/early October on 29th, 30th, and 1st October.

I know some areas in the Northern Quarter were attacked, but I'm not sure about Dale Street since the area near the train station was all cordoned off.

I'll be ringing An Outlet first thing tomorrow morning to confirm whether it's safe and will let you know the outcome.

If there was no damage then we're still holding the festival since shops were all open today and I'm not letting a few thugs ruin what we've been planning for months.

With love,
Indigo.

Hi Cynthia,'One wasp hidden in the gentle petals makes all the blossoms suspect and much joy is lost'

I would argue that this final stanza comes across more powerfully as a proverb because of its pithiness and wisdom of observation plus expression.

If it is a metaphor as well although I cannot see it as such, it may be of lesser metaphorical significance IOM.

That said, I would like to see it argued in other opinions as it is an interesting point. xx

Hello again Cynthia. Can I thank you for taking the time to comment on Apparition, and for the very generous comments.
As always you make some very constructive comments for which I am grateful.
I hardly ever qualify my work but only one thing I feel needs an explanation.
The poem formed the part of a collection about Angling. When one fishes into the late evening, the light changes imperceptibly, that is to say, you don't notice it until it has. Whilst I understand your comment and am happy for your observation, a fisherman would similarly understand mine.

Many thanks once again,

Graham

Hi Cynthia, thanx for your comment on Aftermath, appreciate your feedback. I know what you mean, but I don't really go for this minimalist style poetry, always feels like theres words missing to me! I think I write how I talk really but will bear it in mind!

I know what you mean about the clouds on the sky, but the way the clouds appeared to be brush painted on the sky was what inspired it initially and was as strong as that, so while I lie your suggestions they don't really feel as strong as the way I saw them, anyway thanx again for reading hope to see you soon Jeff

Also, this is one of 4 or 5 poems I;ve done about him recently in which different things get emphasised and maybe a more balanced picture is drawn. I'll post my poem CHEMO which you might find an intersting contrast.

Hi Cynthia, thanks for your kind comments on Crossing Place, I suppose I have a different view on death to most, being mainly pragmatic about it after almost coming to grief some years ago. Sometimes working with terminally ill people I find I am able to talk naturally about the subject when others prefer to run a mile. I suppose the main idea for this poem came from the juxtaposition of its former use and present situation as thoroughfares of different kinds. Thanks again.

Hi Cynthia Thanks for the comments. This is one of several poems about my father-in-law. It was touch and go whether he would reach 80 because he has cancer. It's hard for me to know how others might react to these poems. They are part of my ongoing exploration of Irishness and my own 2nd generation identity. My father-in-law is a very decent man, but we have spent a lifetime arguing about nationalism and I have less and less patience with it. This is all part of the subtext here. I don't know if this makes any sense or whether it just seems a rant.I wouldn't like anyone to think I am mocking him, but he has always made such a fuss about only drinking Irish whiskey without even trying scotch. that it was alot easier to get him to finish that bottle by passing it off as 'the real mackoy'.

Hi Cynthia, re; 'Etchings', perhaps I confused the issue here, under the class system my forebears would have received pittances for a salary, whereas the posh types lived high life styles at the expense of others. That was the point I was trying to make perhaps not too successfully I think and without a focus on the cost of a grave in particular. Many thanks for your comments.

Many thanks for your comments also on Claws, Gondwanaland, Solitary and Vespula Vulgaris about which I have replied individually.

Have had 'other worldly' experiences too.

Am doing a lot of reading just now including a book post the American Revolution and how loyalists to the British crown left USA to populate places like Bermuda, helped to shape Canada as we know it today as well - its helping me to understand quite a lot about the period.

...and thus it goes.

LET ME EXPLAIN...

(and thus it goes. My brain interposing with drivel...)
and sometimes the words come out wardback and shus instead of 'thus' but should come out frontward...'Thus'
( I tire of this consious senility, this humour by disguise...)
...with lost inflection and missing adverbs splet not spelt...
( and so it goes...)

and...thus it goes.
