Hi Cynthia

Thank you so much for your comments on my poems. I will admit I had a tear in my eye when I read them. It has really given me a well needed confidence boost for my writing, as I'm struggling a bit at the mo! x

Thank you Cynthia for your kind and thoughtful comments. I've no idea whether I'm going through a phase of writing better stuff - that's for others to say - but, if I am, it's not to do with workshops because I don't attend. Hope to run into you one day.

Good Morning Cynthia

As ever your critique is bang 'on the money'...but try as I might I feel the tinge of purple is never the less integral.

I've performed this poem both ways to the middle and just feel that the over adjectivised version suits my ear....rather than the page...wherein you are correct.

Anyway, as always Cynthia so good to hear from you.

Hope to see you soon.
love
Gus xx

Hi Cynthia, thanks for the feedback on 'Verbdrift'. The funny thing is, it was originally more free-flowing, written in blank verse with no stanzas, but I tried to rein it in a bit when typing it out - by re-structuring it - editing the odd line and adding a new one.

Perhaps I should have left it how it was, or else put more care into the structure and meter in an effort to improve it like I was intending. Again, cheers for the comment and the encouragement! Much appreciated. David.

Hi- re ''How do women escape?'' the blood spilt was a reference to the violence already suffered by the woman. If I could have gone back in time I would have drew a question mark- to act as an interrogative- in the blood. Then I may have been up for an Arts Council grant. Tommy

Aromatic smile - a moment, a smell of anticipation , a taste of adrenaline , the flush of your cheeks and the sweat of your brow, conjours an intoxicating cocktail of imaginations.

I tried to use personal experience and expectation.

I was referencing those guilty (convicted or otherwise). Those playing no part in acts of pedophilia are not being referred to.

''extremes are never valid because they lack the potential argument of persuasion.'' I think 'extremity' depends upon your position in any argument. Is it extreme to want that ALL poverty be removed?

I for one subscribe to the values proffered by James Connolly:
''...’Tis passing strange, yet I declare
Such statements give me mirth,
For our demands most moderate are,
We only want the earth.'' Tommy

Hello Cynthia, thank you for your kind words on Submission.
You pose a question about tenses.

The beginning and end are in the future tense as the death has not happened. It is a commentary of how I think I would feel if something were to happen and its effect.
The central piece is reminiscence of the components of a relationship.

I'm sorry if it feels confusing but I never usually explain my work too much. My ending I feel is more profound, prophetic even.

Many thanks once again for your views, always appreciated.

very best regards,

Graham

Hi Cynthia I'm glad you're keeping up with the postcards. I did worry in this one that I might come across as a bit dismissive of 'ancient wisdom' - however, the context is ironic. It is after all tragic that civilizations that have roots going deep into ancient philosophies couldn't do better than murder each other for decades. Even BUddhism in SRi Lanka can be quite militant and bloodthirsty. I suppose also there is the ironic contrast between the bluntness of the Customs sign - which I must say was really disconcerting (even though I've never touched an illicit drug in my life!) and the labyrinthine complecity of the philosophy of the Indian subcontinent.

Cynthia
thanks for your recent comments on my poem 'Vermin'. Interested in your suggestion to change the 'tossed in the air' wording, as my intention was to keep each line to 8 syllables - I'm never sure whether words like 'tossed' count as one or two - in my yorkshire diallect when read aloud it's definitely only one :-)
I'm new to the WOL community, so not sure on the etiquette for responding etc - thought best to comment on your profile page rather than on the blog entry. Anyway - went and read some of your work on your profile page - liking it - particularly like the blog post this evening - thanks once again

Well spotted, Cynthia, trouble is I keep re-ordering them each time I do a new one. When I get around to it I'll have to retitle them on this site too. I must say WOL is great in enabling you to post a poem and an appropriate image - which can then be re-posted on Face Book. Technology is really great these days! Didn't have all that in 1975 either!

Hi Cynthia Thanks so much for the encouragement re my 'postcard'. I wasn't sure if they be of any intetrested to others. I've done about 18 so far and have really enjoyed using a form that is very short, but enables you to use some quirky little memory, but then open up a pathway to something bigger. THemes are also beginning to link them up as well. I'll keep you informed!

Hi Cynthia Thanks for the comms on the two postcard poems. You were spot on with 'Rouen' That's where the English burned Joan of Arc. I've been getting a bit addicted to these little poems. They usually start of with some little memory that has been at the back of my mind for years, but then open up other themes which link up with others in the series. I've done 15 so far. Not sure where it will end. Maybe 20? Maybe more!
