Hi Cynthia - (When Man Has Gone) I am not sure why I arrived at a ten-toed foot other than to demonstrate an alternative form - I have responded in some depth on this and really appreciate your views. Thanks for commenting in such depth x

"Somewhere the Sun" I feel expresses in a different way what I was going on about in JUNK.
I really like it-"the poets leapt like tigers/or wanted to" is great and funny : )

Hi Cynthia - many thanks for commenting on Ireland with Betjeman - I did wonder how this might be perceived and who Emily really was especially in the light of some recent revelations that it may have been the late (?) Duchess of Devonshire from highest nobility in the land x

Ha - and what has now happened to Haven - is nothing safe on your profile?

Funnily enough I read it today but was too short on time to comment. I was going to come back and say that it obviously wasn't autobiographical. Anyone with a decent knowledge of Barbara Cartland (as the teenage moi was) would know that her books would never have entertained the union of a male farm-hand with a monied female. Far more likely for an ordinary girl to find a french/italian count or some english nobleman and be swept off her feet - into a four poster bed - not a hay stack.

I enjoyed the poem - though I needed to revisit to comment on style. I did wonder whether such a woman really existed. She seemed too happy and contented in her little bubble - not lonely at all. xx

Hi David. Yes, thanks very much for your recent comments on the Betjeman poem and Touch Wood. Fair enough, if he's not your cup of tea. I was quite taken aback by the amount of affection he engenders. Of course, I feel a great bond because of his love of trains. Sometimes I find it difficult to write about anything else but railways!

You must know my views on catharsis by now Anthony…
I do write the occasional autobiographically inspired piece – though my pride would stop me from going to the outer limits. I think women are more inclined to give vent to their emotions in this way and I don’t see it as a bad thing. Catharsis only gets a bad name when the needle gets stuck and we fail to look beyond ourselves. Our own blood and tears are but a drop in the ocean when you take a look around.

OK, I'll 'fess up! If there wasn't that "little bit" of "us" in our writing it would all be much the same I suspect. That doesn't mean though that we write all our "characters" and scenarios from first-hand experience. Isn't that what imagination's for? ( although I wouldn't have minded being George Best for a while!)

" . . . a heart, a strong mind and a very sensitive soul."

I nearly fell off my "big chair"! Does The Pope know this- I should be in for Sainthood!

;)

Thanks for paying me a visit Anthony - what doesn't kill us certainly makes us stronger :) Am working hard on doing more performance/funny stuff - though I fear my latest may be too blue to post on WOL. Co-incidentally, it also bigs up Wigan - the best place to perform in the whole North West, from my experience. We don't take ourselves 'too' seriously up here, which makes for an entertaining evening. You will have to revisit your roots one day. xx

Hi Isobel,

Thanks for looking in on "alpha et omega", and, as always, for your comments - never drivel! As always it is in no way autobiographical; you should know by now that I seldom do that kind of stuff. You are right in that it's "generic"; hopefully anyway. Most, if not all, have been in "those" situations, and I wanted to write something universal. There was no conscious link between the first and second "couples", although I can see how it might seem that way. I'm pleased you found your own interpretation. I did try to shift the focus by using second-person he/she in alpha, and third person they in omega. Not sure if that worked.

I'm glad your compering stint went well; the challenges we set for ourselves make us stronger and more confident, and it looks like you were appreciated.

So, now you're "a performance poet living in Wigan" - don't sell yourself short! ;-)

Regards,
A.E.

I more-than-fancied her myself, but was already hitched anyway. Thinking afterwards, I was ashamed to say that I thought I'd love to jump her bones, but, would I want to be seen out with her ? No - and that's the shameful part and I would not normally think of myself as the shallow type, but I guess this showed my true colours ?

Hi Elaine, thanks for the feedback on "Twisting Knives", much appreciated.

With regard to "When nothing expected..." it's deliberate, "nothing's" is too neat & proper & I wanted this piece to be anything but that. Also the line is more like nothing ever than simply nothing is.
