Poetry Please favourites/Edward Thomas...etc.
I consider differences of opinion a healthy
sign in any worthwhile society. But the
curmudgeon in me has no difficulty in jousting
with the self-righteous, self-serving and self-pitying who use poetry as their vehicle. BUT
you will never find me resorting to abuse
towards those who take ME to task, either for
my poems or a POV...unlike some who it is clear
are quick to delete views they cannot handle and trot out words like "troll" in response, like petulant children.
Carry on disagreeing. You could always be right...
or perhaps not.
Ego argues...wisdom discusses.

Hi Cynthia, thank you for your comments on The Tint. I did deliberately line it this way so the words would seem to tumble rather than flow as they were read. Thank you for liking though it is much appreciated.

Ta for looking in on 'Some Love' Marksy. Been away for a month in France and thought I'd come back with a notebook full of poems. (I didn't) Actually wrote 'Some Love' during a lull at work!
All the best, Steve

Poland was very different to Syria - it wanted to be rescued from its aggressors - as did most countries that Germany invaded.
In Syria you have a sizeable proportion of the resident population hostile to western intervention and non Muslim led action. In my opinion, any long term solutions there would have to include Arab involvement.

hello Starfish,
Many thanks for your kind comments on "The Masterly Strategy..."
Not my usual genre but I felt rather strongly about the lack of action which seemed to be the public mood.
(I have reverted to type in my latest offering!)

what ho, Izzy,
Thankyou for commenting on "The Masterly Strategy ..."
I agree that consequences are unpredictable and possibly dire. They were when we declared war on Germany for invading Poland. But what would the consequences have been if we had not?

Hello MC,
Thanks for your thoughts on "The Masterly Strategy..."
I agree the situation is complex, not least because aiding the rebels might bite us on the bum. And it is wise to consider consequences.
There are, though, in my opinion, some actions so vile that the right thing to do is to do the right thing and live with the consequences.

Hello Jane,
Thanks for your thoughts on "Hugging Candles".
Yes, I too feel an enormous weight of history (as well as an enormous weight of timber!) when I open and close up each day. The West door of the Abbey doesn't have a lock; it's secured by an enormous wooden beam I have to lift in pace each night. Very medieval!
"Hugging" = trimming them with a knife so they fit the holders.

Dave, I have never seen the Leonard Cohen poem before. Thank you for sharing it with me. The ideas do seem to conjoin, and then fly apart. The similarity of vocabulary is a bit shocking. But it's bound to be a fairly common metaphor among people who think about things along certain lines of interest. It gave me a bit of a shiver.

Morning!
Haha love the juggling metaphor! No, I know what you mean about it working for you - plenty of times it's been that way for me too, where people don't seem to read it the way I hear it in my head, and in my head, the metre is perfect. No worries mate :)
It's a great poem, you should be made up with it :)

hey Laura - many thanks (once again) for your kind and thoughtful comments on 'cycle of the scarecrow'. I'm really pleased with this one because I originally blogged just one of the 4 'quartets' as a finished piece and then realised there was more to be done :-)
Interesting points about the metre - cos it does work for me (8 syllable count per line) but, because of the technical difficulty in getting all the monorhymes to fit - it makes it bloody hard to keep the meaning, metre, syllable count and rhyme all in sync - like juggling 4 hot pokers with 8 plates of jelly
:-) I'll have a look at it - but, as I say, when I read it I can make the metre work - so it may just be an 'on the paper' glich
Ta
Ian
