NO BETTER ENDING

entry picture

(A re-post from 2011.  But class is timeless)

As quiet closes end of day

When evening’s calm has gripped us

I set a fire and in it lay

Dried logs of eucalyptus.

A billowing blue smokiness

And flames begin to dance;

The leaves and trees stand motionless,

No breeze to break their trance.

The silence of the setting scene

Occasionally lifts

From traffic on the A19

And screeching of the swifts.

Of all the ways I might desire

To welcome dusk’s descending

I’d choose this garden and this fire;

There is no better ending.

I don't recall this from 2011 but it is certainly worth a re-post. I can
almost smell those burning logs and see the smoke wafting upwards.
Betjeman and Binyon would surely approve!

Oh, John I see Bet Boop's come back
She's seen your bod, she craves
I think you've done it, well and good
Your clothes is all you'll save.....

Forgive me, Don, if I have strayed
From my usual stuff,
But if it helps then picture me
Writing in the buff.

John this poem ain't like you
It's not in genre Coop
Where is the bit of sauce I ask
A bit of Betty Boop ?

You did build up my hopes, you did
You built a fire, said 'lay'
I thought, indeed, he's on right track
A Betty Boop sex-play?

Betty Boop did not appear
Gave up, went down the road
Looking for excitement
For sex episodes......

Lovely and reaching cherished memories for each of us, I expect.

A wonderfully sensitive atmospheric offering and I am in total agreement; I havn't got enough room to let a fire rage where I am, but I do have some big eucalyptus rings , so I can dream can't I?
