THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT BUT THIN TODAY

entry picture

(A poem for Autumn. I hate bloody Autumn!)

The sun shines bright but thin today

But still casts shadows, if to say,

“Remember I’ll be strong once more

When winter’s chill has passed away”.

For as in summers gone before

The garden’s growth it will restore

To chit the seed and warm the beast

And once again be held in awe.

Then to the West and from the East

Its timeless rays shall be released

Regenerative warmth bestowing

Fecundity to bear the feast.

For following their springtime sowing

Fruit and crop and flower growing

The table set with food and spray

Beneath its incandescent glowing.

Such bounty though we must defray

But do so without dull dismay

Take comfort that it is not snowing

The sun shines bright but thin today.

Like riding a bike to a destination - there is the pleasing
aspect that no effort is required freewheeling downhill on the way!

Thanks, MC. I experimented with this form which, I have to say, I find rather unsatisfying.
I will agree the first line is its best - it goes downhill from there!

I like the unusual rhyme pattern employed here. The
subject is approached in a way that adds attractively to
other poems about autumn that have gone before - with
a sense of reality that lingers in the mind with the line
"The sun shines bright but thin today". Inspired!
