I HAVE AN OLD MAN'S PROBLEM

entry picture

I have an old man’s problem, which is disrupting me

That frequently throughout the night I need to take a pee.

I’ve had the usual prostate check – the doctor’s broddling thumb

Covered with such lubricant it slipped right up my bum.

Then MRI and biopsy each underwent with fear

The findings were most welcome, though; no cancer – I was clear.

But inconveniently the problem stubbornly remained

Within an hour I’d need a pee; I never got it drained.

I had what they call “urgency” – the need to take a leak

With little warning; when I did the stream was thin and weak.

I’d have to ask the bloke next stall, as out our todgers flopped

If he’d tell me when I’d started and also when I’d stopped.

I went to see the doc again to see what he could do

Beside the standard Wellness sheet he gave a tip or two.

He told me I should drink more water – four pints every day

And I should train my bladder so it held the wee at bay.

But then upon the internet I found out something more

You gain control by exercising with your pelvic floor.

I did the rest and on this tip I thought my bets I’d hedge

You do this by the motion, chaps, of lifting up your veg.

They recommend these daily “lifts” you start in sets of ten

In reps of three a day at first, then build it up again.

I started this regime last week and built up more and more

Developing in just two weeks an iron man’s pelvic floor.

My scrotum is so exercised I can perform this trick

I tether cord around my balls and raise a building brick.

So now my bladder’s well behaved control I do not lack

But I’m off to see the doc again.  I’ve problems with my back.

Sad but true that most men don't know their anus from their
elbow. A bit of body-awareness and that rare visitor - common sense - would help considerably in useful
self-assessment before things get out of hand (if you'll
excuse the expression in this context). My late brother-in-law once mentioned to his wife that he hadn't had a pee for many hours despite some heavy social wine imbibing - whereupon she got him off to hospital where he had urgent in-house treatment that diagnosed a restricted urine flow due to...guess
what? It wasn't cancer but the
risks to health were just as potent at the time. Know thyself - says
the Bible. How true!

Too right, MC. And to think that doctors spend years getting trained and me and you Are qualified after a couple of episodes of Casualty!

JC - I recall my elder brother having a problem with coffee
irritating his bladder => unwanted sudden needs to empty
it. I suspect that this sort of thing can slip by unnoticed
or unconsidered. But research shows that the usual
process can add up to 8 in a 24 hr. period. Better that
than bladder retention and the hazards that can produce!!

Dog’s are easy to control, Don. My bladder’s more problematic.

How to get maximum comments. Write a public information poem. ? How to train your dog not to stop and pee every 10 yards. Be firm. You control the dog. The dog doesn't control you. ?

Quite right, MC. Indeed a biopsy following on from an MRI scan is not foolproof. Samples may be taken from a "clean" part of the prostate with cancerous areas undetected.
But all of theses, the initial PSA, the MRI scan and especially the biopsy are bloody good guides and men should find out.
Trevor - It is my lot in life to be the font of wisdom.

Good thinking - putting a topical "problem" in verse form.
Been there - know about it. Drinking coffee, tea and
other liquids in the hours before bedtime CAN be a
cause of needing to get up in the night more than once.
HOWEVER...
there IS a difference between an enlarged prostate (a
medical fact of life for men of 50+apparently) which can
press on the tube from the bladder, signalling a "need"
to pee, especially at night - and a cancerous prostate
about which there is ongoing divided opinion regarding
testing. This is because the popular Prostate Specific
Antigen (PSA) test is not a 100% reliable guide and it is
considered by some that the stress and concern this
can raise in a patient can detrimentally affect the health
anyway. There is also the fact that prostate cancer is
slow growing and a sufferer may well die of old age
before it becomes a life-threatening issue.
The most reliable medical test is certainly the MRI SCAN
but even that needs very careful checking before any
decision is taken for a patient to require further action
which can have a huge effect on the male psyche and
basic daily convenience/comfort.
Moral: prevention IS better than cure and a carefully
researched diet (easy these days online!) can contribute
considerably to helping avoid disease and limiting any
discomfort while COMMON SENSE should dictate seeking
medical advice about any disturbing changes in physical
behaviour/signs/symptoms below the belt!

Thanks, Taylor. The real message I'd like for blokes to take from it is GO AND GET YOURSELF CHECKED. Prostate cancer is one of the most curable cancers, the more so if it is spotted early.
I was lucky.

I don't know what to recommend
John, about your back
Some remedies that I have heard
Bring pee problems right back

Be careful what the doc says
Check out the internet
To verify what he says
And pee-leak you won't get ?

I' m looking after my daughter's dog whilst she's on honeymoon. What's this got to do with John's problem I hear you ask? Well, when I take him for a walk he has the ability to cock his leg and wee just a smidge every 10 yards over a distance of about 1000 yards.

Does this help at all John?
