Brand New Lexicon

They’re making up a lexicon

designed for you and me

Previously ‘unemployed’

now we’re branded ‘workless

Poverty has been renamed

and all the blame is ours

The poor must pay for all the sins

of sons of tax-evaders

There’s a brand new lexicon

Workless worthless shiftless shirkers

Don’t you know it’s all your fault?

Don’t you know redundancy

should be a mark of shame?

That failing dodgy DLA tests

means that you are ‘fit for work’?

Here’s the deal, it’s new I’m told -

slavery is working fare

Welfare de-forms make it so

It’s a brand new lexicon

They’re absolutely clear on this

They’ll piss disinformation

into every single ear

A BBC Manipulingo

Spanking top-down Tory lingo

Coalition buzzword bingo

Sign on and shout ‘house’

Use the brand new lexicon

Workless worthless shiftless shirkers

used to be employed

But now we’re in a double dip

triple dip

unlucky dip

take your pick

They’re making up

a brand new lexicon

I just love this.....not to encourage privatisation but if you were that way inclined "BBC Manipulingo" is worth copyrighting...I shouldn't even be thinking that way!

sock it to them, as Dave says. and I agree that it cries out for some sort of repetition, rhyme to reinforce its messages.
That way, you might go viral, start a lexicon wave, or something?
I have no problem with it being on here, and I cannot imagine that our news editor will. Now, if we knew that someone was going to read a poem at the Tax bus we could put that on our news.

Thanks Dave

Well, it makes me furious the way they manipulate the language for their own ends.

And a great link there for the Tax Bus! What a brilliant idea. I'll do my best to get to the Wigan one, cheers.

I love the passion in this, Laura, and the anger. Sock it to 'em

Bearing in mind what the poem says, especially the first stanza, can I take this chance to plug the Tax Bus. It's a double-decker which has been going round the UK over a month now and will be local soon.

Details and locations at
http://www.christianaid.org.uk/getinvolved/inyourarea/england/northwest/events/taxjusticetour.aspx

It's at Bolton and Wigan on the 13th and Liverpool, Warrington and Manchester on the 15th (I'll be aboard that day as a volunteer)

It is stuffed with information including a good DVD and has a simple bold message on the side

TAX AVOIDANCE HURTS THE POOR

Do delete all this if you don't want it on your thread.

Cheers folks!

Heh - aye, right enough Anthony ;)

Sid - there's more internal rhyming at first I know but I get bored doing really obvious rhymes all the way through. It's obviously a performance piece rather than page, so will work well in that respect I think.

I like the refrain and I share the sentiments.Have to say I enjoyed the last 2 verses more, simply due to the rhymes you introduce. It seems to be the sort of poem crying out for rhyme.Like your house/poor house.

Hi Laura,

Despite being fully employed since the day I left school at 16, I have always found work to be a much overrated occupation. Now creativity - well, that's a different matter altogether. Work is the evil necessity which occurs between weekens - creativity is food for the soul. I see your soul seems to be doing rather well at present!

A.E.
