Bowing out: Winston's message to all his friends on WOL

entry picture

Write Out Loud's Winston Plowes - the man who puts out the WOL welcome mat for new members - has decided to relinquish his role as long-serving membership supremo at the end of the year because of his increasing workload and other commitments. WOL's founder, Julian Jordon, paid tribute to "my good friend Winston" as a stalwart of the WOL admin team, to his "concern for others" and "desire to help them grow", and to his "commitment, above and beyond his designated post".

In a message to all WOL members Win wrote:

"Dear All,

My time at WOL membership HQ will come to an end on the last day of this year. Increasing workload and other projects mean sadly that I can no longer devote enough time to my post. It has been a time filled with countless friendships, associations, collaborations and of course poetry. I cannot overestimate how much WOL has helped shape me as a poet and hope this will continue in years to come as I will continue to be a non-admin member of the site. I would like to say a massive thank you here to all members of the web team past and present and of course to the 1,000-strong membership of WOL for making this site the vibrant, fun, creative and informative place that it is.

The existence and future of WOL depends upon voluntary help to run its many parts. If you fancy getting involved in a rewarding role that will help our site then please get in touch with Julian Jordan at julian@writeoutloud.net

Said Hamlet to Ophelia,

I'll draw a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use?

2B or not 2B?

(Spike Milligan)"

Write Out Loud's founder, Julian Jordon, said: "My good friend Winston Plowes has been a stalwart of the Write Out Loud team for such a long time now that it seems like he has always been with us; it will be difficult to contemplate how we will manage without him. It does not easily compute. Quite apart from Win's passion for poetry, it is his concern for others, his desire to help them grow and learn from the incredible open-mic poetry movement and our online community. This what I, and the rest of the team will miss when he is no longer on this side of the counter, as it were. His commitment has been above and beyond his designated post, not least in giving support to me at difficult times.

"I fully understand his reasons for wanting a rest from it all. Write Out Loud has grown so much, particularly in the past year, that it has been a greater job than any of our volunteers 'signed up' for; and the increased demands from the website make it difficult for a freelancer like Win to commit to it whilst needing to devote increasing amounts of time to making a living in this difficult economic era. I want to mention also his support for Sean in running the Hebden Bridge Write Out Loud night through its various difficult times. Thank you Win, for all that you have done for Write Out Loud, your fellow team members, its poets, its gig organisers and your many friends on- and offline. We look forward to reading and hearing your poetry into the future."

You will be sadly missed, Winston, but I also wish you well for the future, and hope you continue to post your excellent poetry. Like Laura I also remember your patience and assistance with the ghazals, and on behalf of the whole WOL community, thank you so much for your dedication during your time on admin.

I agree with Greg, Win. Sorry we never met as I am such a recent addition to the team but would nevertheless like to add my good wishes along with the others and thanks for all your hard work.

Best wishes for whatever you choose to do in the future. WOL's loss is someone else's gain - but, hopefully, mainly your OWN!

Houston

When I first joined WOL, you were the one who made me feel so incredibly welcome, and you made such a lovely supportive comment on my samples and first blog, that it actually made me think that maybe I COULD write! Through the encouragement and support of you and all WOLers, I have gone on to write SO much over this last year (56 blinkin poems!! and more besides that I haven't put up on here!), got addicted to performing, and now published five times! I look back in amazement at the last year, and you are a huge part of that. Will never forget your endless reserves of patience and kindness when I was trying to learn how to write those bloody ghazals haha :D :D

Thank you so SO much for everything, I hope everything goes brilliantly for you, and dearly hope to see you again soon at some venue or another, chap.

Masses of good wishes and a huge hug for you

Love

Tom :) x

Big boots to fill indeed. So much hard work, reliability and caring. As others have said, Win, you have been one of the most - if not the most - positive presences on the site and on the circuit, along with being a very good poet when you're not admin-ing. Many thanks and please don't disappear!

I remember when I first joined WOL, the warm and encouraging welcome you gave me Win. Since then I feel we have become friends, even though I only met you once at the first WOL Big Weekend. I've also enjoyed the journey you have taken us on with your fabulous poetry. You are a star! xx

I'm totally gutted by this news. Winston has been the very public face of WOL - very warm, very all embracing, very measured - I could go on...

His will be very big boots to fill. I do hope we manage someone as good natured and enthusiastic. I also hope that you keep in touch Winston, write plenty more poetry as Greg says and turn up to some of our Lancashire gigs.

What a sad way to approach the New Year. Sorry - shouldn't be 'thinking out loud' and I should be wanting the best for you. :( xx

I'll follow on from Greg and Jane here in the fact I've met Win on a number of occasions in Bolton, Bury and Middleton to name but a few.. He's a lovely, warm man with an energy and passion about poetry that is lovely to see him. He's helped me out on a number of occasions with bits and pieces on Write Out Loud and represents as Greg said, the heart and soul of Write Out Loud.

I hope he chooses to keep posting.

I'd just like to add a few words to those of Julian's. I first met Winston when I ventured along to Write Out Loud at Hebden Bridge last year on a rare trip north. He was compering that night, and I really appreciated his warm welcome and dry wit. His enthusiasm and eagerness to engage has been obvious to anyone who has used this site for a long time, and I'm sure will not be diminished in the future. Thanks Win for all your hard work welcoming hordes of poets aboard WOL. You're one of those who truly represent the heart and soul of Write Out Loud.
