Not a tit at all

The bearded tit is not a tit; it’s not a tit at all.

The clues are in the finer points, the details very small.

I know you’ll not believe it, and you’ll want to verify;

So if you’re out one summer’s eve where tits might catch your eye;

If there’s a rustle in the reeds, a twitcher in the rye;

The chances are that you will find a bearded tit close by.

So get down on your hands and knees and through the rushes crawl;

Just look at it, you look at it, it’s not a tit at all.

Not even just a little bit, it’s simply not a tit.

Perhaps you’ll hear it, so keep quiet and listen out for it.

It doesn’t sound much like a tit, it sings a ping- ping song.

How could those ornithologists have got it all so wrong?

The long tailed tit which looks like it is every bit a tit,

A pity as the bearded tit is pretty, I’ll admit.

And maybe when you look at it, you‘ll notice something weird;

It has two long moustachios, it doesn’t have a beard.

It should be moustached reedling, but that doesn’t seem to fit,

And so I guess we’re stuck with it, salute the bearded tit!

Many thanks to The Rev'd Richard Stamp of Victoria, Australia for asking permission to include this poem in his Bird of the Month newsletter and for supplying some excellent photos - one of which is included as an illustration. To any of the newsletter readers who may have checked this out - welcome and thank you. And thanks to Julian for this website which makes this sort of thing possible. Dave

Hi Dave
I love poems that I can understand; are witty; and very clever. For me, this does it all.

Brilliant to see this up here. Thanks - a great laugh out loud poem for a miserable rainy day or just any time. Loved this at the Tudor last night. You made a big contribution to making a good night out even better. Took "Blue Nun" into work today to get us all singing and in the mood for the weekend! Cheers, Dave. X

Terrific poem, Dave; twitching in the wry. Have you got any more comical bird observations up your sleeve? Would make a great collection.

I don't believe you, Dave. You'll be telling me next that Welsh Rabbit is cheese!
I can feel a Discussion coming on.

Excellent Dave. Agree with the others re your stuff and the Tudor last night.

I dabble in a bit of incompetent bird-watching and the bearded tit is one bird which has always proved elusive. It's all those reeds it's alleged to hang out in. I don't think it exists, it's all a conspiracy.

Fantastic, I loved this last night. Have been really very down of late, but you and Ian, amongst others, really made me laugh out loud. You don't know how much I needed that!

Sometimes I wish I could write funny, but there's no need, when you do it so well :)

There should be a dawn chorus all singing "Lovely poem Dave!"

Blummin hilarious, in true Dave Carr style! This raised more than a titter at the Tudor - you had us laughing like hyenas... xx
