What is evil

What now, what is evil?

I’m sure we can agree

if killing just one child is awful,

thousands more must be

evil’s outright apogee.

No problem pegging evil.

But how to deal with evil?

Find the men (we know

it’s mainly men). Pronounce those people

lowest of the low.

Blazon what they did, and show

those men to be pure evil.

Now, certain who is evil,

you’ve reason for a fight

utilising any lethal

armament to smite

those monsters, owning perfect right

to counter what is evil.

But if a man does evil,

is he an evil man?

And if he matches bad with equal

good, then what’s the plan?

If he loves his country, can

we call him good or evil?

And if he’s drubbed by evil

all his wretched life,

if it forged him on its anvil,

is that alone enough

to answer why he takes a knife

and carves an act of evil?

And if I look at evil

then quickly look away

afraid the rolling news retrieval

of fact might spoil my day,

do I hold a right to say

I’m not condoning evil?

It’s known worldwide what evil

cut you to the core.

Although you’re fighting for survival,

prodded into war,

with right and might, and tanks, you’re sure

to vanquish what is evil.

But what if war on evil

leaves ten thousand dead,

mostly those too young or feeble

to run with those who fled,

the sand, your hands, your minds, stained red…

What now?  What is evil?

Yes Uilleam, I was reading this opinion piece in the Guardian this week https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/03/war-israel-hamas-conflict-peace-extremists
I’ve not been paying much attention to the Israel/Palestine problem in recent years, but it appears possible that Netanyahu has been covertly supporting Hamas for many years in order to keep Gaza and the West Bank divided and prevent the formation of a Palestinian state. Shocking if so!

M.C. - I can find nothing to disagree with in what you say on this occasion.

Thanks Tim, many important questions there.
A couple of days ago I heard a news commentator ask:

How would Netanyahu behave if Hamas were embedded in Israeli towns and cities...what kind of concern would he show for the safety of his innocent citizens?

Oh the irony; in that Netanyahu was directly complicit in enabling / supporting Hamas in order to frustrate a peace solution which he and his government are on record as not wanting...a fact not broadly aired on UK news outlets.

It has been said that the first casualty of war is the truth. Humanity has a great facility for self-delusion in pursuit of a
conviction or belief. It was Stalin (an example who managed
to hide his deeds behind those of his German equivalant) who
spoke of a single death being a tragedy and a thousand as a
statistic (forgive my possible misquote but it's near enough).
That continues and it needs a very detached dispassionate
approach "to sort the wheat from the chaff". Evil is more
readily identified with the deeds perpetrated by Isis disciples
who placed captured aid workers before a camera and beheaded them. The Geneva Convention seems a very long way from that type of mindset!

Yes Keith, I have been thinking along the same lines myself recently. Everyone has been saying for years that a 2 state solution is the only way to go, but we manage quite OK in the UK with 4 devolved countries in one democratic state. Generally English people choose to live in England, Scots in Scotland and Welsh in Wales but there is no compulsion and we’re free to travel and work wherever we like and buy property in another part of the UK if we can afford to. There’s some nationalistic friction of course but the important thing is, nobody dies. Northern Ireland hasn’t worked so well but it’s improving there now. I don’t know why the same sort of model couldn’t work in Israel/Palestine. Jews could have an Israel to call their homeland and Palestinians could have a country of their own but share in the freedom and prosperity of Israel. But what do I know, I’m no expert!

Tim,
Thank you for acknowledging the comments of your readers. You draw your readers to the present conflict which rages in the Middle East. I have visited Israel on several occasions and cannot see a two nation scenario being the answer. I am more ambitious and would like to see two nations in one state. A democracy with equal rights and opportunities for all. The present situation is not conducive to an meaningful dialogue but hope must survive as continued warfare is no answer.
Thank you again,
Keith

Thanks for the comments Helene, Stephen, John and Keith. Yes it’s hard to write about what’s happening in the world at the moment because there’s a war and both sides are in the wrong, but I’m a poet who’s always felt a need to engage with world issues. This poem is really just me trying to get my thoughts in order, but what the solution is to the Israel/Palestine problem I have no more idea than anyone else.

An interesting poem on a difficult subject. I believe that evil is a source which is prevalent in the world, the origins of which are sinister and unclear. Evil infects people in a manner similar to a disease. I do not think people are intrinsically evil but liable to it through certain circumstances. From a theological angle I also regard evil to be the property of the Evil one whose machinations are to destroy people and create chaos.
A well constructed poem and worthy of a second, if not third read.
Thank you for this,
Keith

I like the structure and consonantal rhymes, Tim. But mostly I like the powerful imagery and thought gone into your assessment of a very complex concept.

A great, well- written and beautifully structured poem, Tim. We need thoughtful and reflective contributions like this at a time of so much hate and so many reflex reactions. Well done and thank you.

Powerful poem. Thank you Tim for writing and sharing this. The deep question that plagues humanity put to poetry.
