Futility

Futility

The tyrannical psychopath

spews forth his bile on a world in fear

Once more from his lofty secured throne

evil plans receive their final brush strokes

Skilfully implemented he herds the innocent and young

into a uniformity of malevolence

Lies are breathed through corrupt organs

to distort and exhort valour and courage

Apathy is transformed into purpose

as young fearful warriors stride forth

Patriotism the pastiche of falsehood

go into battle, ferocious but soon

entrails fall from bursted bellies

as explosions blow brains into oblivion

Forward forever forward

a harvest of bitterness is sown and reaped

Children scream and cower in terror

Then a vacant silence embraces their feeble corpses

The chariots of hell ride out to conquer

The victors and vanquished lie inert on either side of the chasm

Destruction and grief go hand in hand to mourn

the futility of each fateful moment spent

Time and again the carousel of misery

spins out of control

The tyrant sips his chalice of wine in safe seclusion

but with a ready pistol on the altar of shame

Not one soul has won and all is lost

Stephen,
Thank you for your comment. On leaving school I served for ten years in the Army which I do not regret, but now I am a convinced pacifist.

A grimly superb poem, Keith. So many memorable phrases: 'Uniformity of Malevolence' one of the best.

Stephen, Pete and Tom,
Thank you for your comments. As always they are appreciated and a source of encouragement. I have been off site for sometime as I have returned to live in Spain. I need tranquility in my old age.
Thank you again

Nice to have you back, Keith, and with such a grimly truthful piece of brilliance. Superb

Keith
I feel your anger
I think we have all tried to hang words on this , the pen being mightier than the sword at the moment is debatable
A brutal poem for a brutal event
