The Angler

entry picture

The Angler

the tranquility of a lake
the power of a swollen river
the sound of a trickling stream
places you will find the angler
in search of freedom
the catch of a chub, roach or bream
a trout or even a salmon,
oh well, it costs nothing to dream

even on quiet days
when the fish don't show
on the days you haven't caught
time to be at peace with yourself
a chance to sit with your thoughts
as peace and serenity are sought

at one with nature
he blends into the vista
nourishing food for the soul
a heron watches, a dragonfly hovers
a mallard swims by, then a water vole

as the sun sets
and the light goes dim
it's almost time to go home
the float twitches then disappears from sight
a tench, or maybe a carp
I live in hope...

I've gone fishing...

This takes me back happily to my own angling days - and the memory of a guide to fishing for younger folk called "Mr Crabtree
Goes Fishing" - by Bernard Venables: an excellent inspired mix of
drawings and commentary in the pursuit of suggested methods of
seeking out assorted species under various conditions. If actual
angling wasn't possible for whatever reason, curling up in a chair
with this book provided a great substitute.

Considering I know how much I know you love fishing, I'm surprised you haven't covered this topic before, but great stuff. Nice change of gears (:

Enjoyed this, Jeff. And you're in good company. Ted Hughes was a very keen fisherman, wasn't he?
