VILLANELLE FROM HELL

entry picture

Spare me these doldrums of malaise;

Though loss and shame I’ve known before

Last Thursday was the worst of days.

I simply ask each man that plays

To wear his badge as if to war;

Spare me these doldrums of malaise.

And if we lose, lose in a blaze

With passion not a spineless bore;

Last Thursday was the worst of days.

It’s hard to find some kind of praise

When this sticks so within my craw;

Spare me these doldrums of malaise.

And nothing but dull anger stays

And sickens me unto the core;

Last Thursday was the worst of days.

Some later time no doubt I’ll raise

My head and climb up off the floor;

For now there's nothing but malaise

Last Thursday was the worst of days.

You are quite right about consistencyMC. We coined the very definition-“Spursy”. We were top of the league just before Christmas, having beaten Man U and City, and the Arse. Two months later we were mid-table having dropped like a stone. “Spursy” from game to game and also within a game, always capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s what every Spud signs up to.

JC - I wasn't aware of that comment from JM.. But maybe he was
"talking them up" into being better than they were? His previous
teams were hardly short of class/talent. The question is - where is
the consistency of play from the players now? Arsenal has had
the same problem. Talk about travelling in hope in a league that
has players swanning around claiming to be worth hundreds of
thousands of £££s a week!! 😐

Indeed it’s sad to see where County are. They vie with Sheffield United for the title of oldest club in the world. If they get back they should adopt the Phoenix motto - if Accrington Stanley hadn’t beaten them to it.
As for “over-priced imitations”, Maureen himself said it was the most talented squad he had ever inherited and that he couldn’t believe his luck. Well, that seems to have deserted him.

JC - Notts County could be in line for a play-off place - along with
Torquay United - as things look interesting in their own league.
As for Jose M. - even the best jeweller can't make diamonds from
over-priced imitations. 😐

I think the writing is on the wall for Maureen, MC. And it is an entreaty to “Go forth and multiply”.
Although I am a slave to Tottenham, Stephen, being from Nottingham I have a soft spot for Notts County, a founder member of the Football League and now tumbled off its four-league ladder.
And thanks for the Like, Jennifer and Holden.

Spectacular stuff, John. Bill Shankly once said that football was more important than life or death (or something like that). Luckily, the lower-league teams I supported have either gone down or into administration.

Knowing of your support for Spurs, I can readily understand and sympathise. What can be said about an attitude that sees such an advantage lost like that?
I find myself asking - will this be fino
For hapless downcast Jose Mourinho?
(The previous manager seems well out of it!!)
