BAME!

entry picture

(You will see where I got the inspiration for this.  More than the inspiration, really.  I have just taken his piece and wrapped the song around it.  See first comment)

Baby, look at me

And tell me what you see

You try to be woke and polite

But BAME just means that I’m not white.

You don’t know what you say or do

With just two boxes – me and you;

How, morally, can this be right,

Defining me as just “non-white”?

BAME!

A comfort to liberal conscience

A catch-all for people non-white;

BAME!

We seem to be travelling backwards

To the time of de Klerk’s apartheid.

So, baby, look at you;

Is our difference so taboo

That you need to be absurd

Fabricating pretty words?

So you must think it’s no big deal,

But how do you think we all feel

To lump together all of these,

The black, the brown, Turk and Chinese?

This might come as some surprise

Perhaps you twonks don’t realise

We’re not remotely all the same

So why, then, brand us all as BAME?

BAME!

A comfort to liberal conscience

A catch-all for people non-white;

BAME!

We seem to be travelling backwards

To the days of de Klerk’s apartheid.

 BAME!

Yes indeed, MC and Po. If there was any justification for the use of the word "BAME" it would be on the census form, meaning "all you others".
I confess I am a bit disappointed that no PC luvvies have risen to defend it.

Thankyou for your thoughts, MC. At least a designation like “WASP” was specific to a certain group. BAME Is a catch-all meaning “anyone not white”, ironically racist.

It seems based in how and why
You use a way to identify
Those who appear here by and by
Not easy however hard you try.
Racism is the mantra nowadays
Interpreted in all sorts of ways
We are who we are perception says
However awkwardly that plays.
WASP was a term I remember too -
Another to describe a collective "who".
And there are others that's for sure,
In time no doubt there'll be more.

Thankyou, Jennifer. The Jonathan Pie link in my first comment below says it all for me and far better than my thing.

Can't stand the term! Might just as well add an L to the word.

Thankyou, Po. Personally, I do not shop there. Although these days I am as rich as Croesus old habits die hard and I still shop at Scope and Age Concern.
And Thankyou for the Like, RoseMary.

Thankyou, moongirl. It does seem to me that we have come full circle form those apartheid notices for "Whites" and "Non-Whites". Did you check out the link to Jonathan Pie in my comment. Any credit is entirely his. "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" as they say.

John you have just won hearts writing this piece. There're no whites and blacks....rather there're only humans. Humanity in any shouldn't die an ugly death with the dagger of racism.

I agree with your piece, have it published.
