How Can I Tell You

How can I tell you that I love you?
I've said the words so many times; it's old hat to you.
I could quote Browning's poem of how she loved.
I'd say it's mine and mean every metaphor,
but you'd know she wrote it and you'd quote it.

I can write love poems just for you,
and every word I write is true,
though I'm not adept with metaphors
and don't use fancy words.

I can bring valentines and whisper sweet nothings,
loud enough for you to hear.
I can bring boxes of your favorite chocolates
and pretty baubles to adorn.
Sometimes I sing a love song
and remind of happy times together.

I may take you to fancy restaurants,
from time to time.

My most eloquent message is not in words and things,
but in caring for you every day.
I guide when you're confused,
make decisions when you can't.

I want to keep you happy
and as healthy as we can manage.
I'll take care of myself, too, so I can care for you.
I'll do these things as long as I am able,
and sometimes I'll also say “I love you.”
