Donations are essential to keep Write Out Loud going

Strangeness & Experience

I want you to be unruly
write hard and clear
about tangled emotion
those who don’t
make me suspicious
I know there are other things
like genocide and selfish parking
and the bruises received
behind closed doors

I want to know people
who are walking antennas
sensitive and gifted
nerves nakedly exposed
flailing in the fallout

I was raised to keep all hidden
I was raised to deny all feeling
“suppress, suppress
deflect with humour”
on the freezing football fields
“stand in goal and we’ll aim at your head”

Thank you, fuck you
the North East of England
I found a way to let it out
I’d have hurt myself or someone else
if not for finding the page
and letting it all out
fuck you, thank you
the North East of England

I want to meet people
who are lightning rods
for strangeness and experience
hearts on tear-stained sleeves
sopping wet with hard-won wisdom
articulate and true

Move me
make me feel something
there is no shame
and we are not ashamed...

(A work-in-progress, but getting there...)

Ah! Thank you Rachel, Frances (please come back) and Kate (hi!) for the likes. This one is hugely personal so it's extra gratifying to think that people might be enjoying it.

Rachel/Ophelia, thank you ? It was an expression of pure honesty, many years too late and I'm so pleased you liked.

Thank you Don, Victoria, Ruth, Don (again), Cynthia and Jennifer for your lovely comments. I'll reply to you each separately soon.

And thank you for the likes; Itsjustmedownhere, Branwell, Dorothy and Mika. It's bit of a crazed poem and I really appreciate you all taking the time to read it.

I do love the WoL community; you're all so full of strangeness and experience that it's easy to feel at home here.

Nice one again Tom - 'write hard and clear about tangled emotion' -
people who are lightening rods for strangeness and experience' you express what you would like to have/be/know so well.

Bold and challenging words, Tom, and very well put. Keep working; you are developing a major contribution, especially to your own life.

I'll probably never meet such stern criteria. Doesn't mean I can't admire it in others. Although, being called 'strange' has actually happened to me. 'Strange' is a fabulous word, full of variations on a theme.

The line about people who are walking antennas really resonated with me, I was coincidentally just thinking of this yesterday when I was doing yoga. Yep embrace the strangeness, we've all got it somewhere in our'd be strange if we didn't?
