Womb For Rent

The womb is delightful
it's nice and soft and warm
the food is free
and there are no dishes to wash
it's a little cramped sometimes
but nothing I can't handle
sometimes I pose for pictures
I bob and tumble
I suck my thumb
they say I am past due
and they may have to take me
still I resist
I've seen that canal
and it's a slippery slope
I wish they would...

All About Football

Go into any town in Texas
and they will tell you
about their high school football team
in Texas it's all about football
they're darn proud of their hometown team
and turn out big every Friday night
bright lights shining
the parking lot full
pom poms
marching bands
the stands full of parents
pumped up and screaming their heads off
you don't have to ask
...

Cows

O'er pastures they roam
grass casually chewing

as dumb as a rock
occasionally mooing

but look in their eyes
a soul you are seeing

they are just like us
lost sentient beings.

Wedding Photos

I remember
when we were young
the feel of her hand in mine
was heaven
being with her was
all I wanted
we were so naive
not knowing what
we were doing
yet somehow not afraid
so much in love
so much to learn
it lasted longer
than we ever expected
now we understand
look at the photos
old black and whites
can you see a faint resemblance?
yes...

My Self

I take good care of myself
it's the only self I have
of course there is himself and herself
even their self
but I think only of MY self
that may be selfish
but that's human nature
we love our self
and want to protect our self
and if we have to pick
our self over some other self
we always revert to our self
we are self-righteous about it
sometimes we...

Giving Thanks

The things that make me happy
are just the simple things

Doodle bugs and coffee mugs
and Daffodils in Spring

No need for wealth or private planes
or millions in the bank

It's simple things like life and health
for which I give my thanks.

Tracks

Mammoth boulders fallen
from the cliffs above
oh how they must have thundered
as they crashed
now like ancient monoliths
they grace this holy place
this still wild river
which meanders through the canyon
winding its way
past footprints of ancient beasts
tracks faint but still visible
after eons of time
they tell the tale
the story of what used to be
g...

Easy Pickings

Two old men
stoop shouldered
bald-headed
watch the cars passing by
like most old men
they like to sit together
and talk amongst themselves
it gives them something to do
in this case they are also waiting for
some road kill to show up
it always does
they have a high vantage point
from the light pole
and it never fails
something will get run over
and...

Blinkers

Signal lights on the car
are called blinkers
I leave my blinkers on
because I am old

I don't hear them blinking
consequently people following me back off
because they don't know what
I'm going to do next

It's called Offensive driving
but it drives my wife nuts
the people behind me however
find it a source of amusement

they always wave
...

Odd Man Out

The hurt of being
odd man out
no one to play with
no friends overnight
no one to hang around with
never picked or chosen
never invited
never like the others
late to bloom
the hurt of rejection
pains the psyche
produces scars
spoils the fruit.

Storing Thoughts

I thought at first
it was just a passing thought
but then the thought
stuck around and became permanent
a thought like that is well worth keeping
I keep it in the back of my mind
along with a lot of other miscellaneous stuff
in fact there is so much stuff back there
it gets confusing at times
and it is hard to find the exact thought I want
I wish I had anoth...

A Better Place

We see him everyday
the old man picking up trash
a cane and a plastic bag
the tools of his trade
he works the parking lot
the roadside
the park
picking up what other people
toss out of the window
or throw on the ground
too lazy to take to a trash can
we were curious about the man
so we stopped one day and asked him
what he was doing and why
he said he was not paid
not even a Vo...

Digging A Hole

When you start digging
know when to stop
know when to keep
your mouth shut
besides making it deeper
you are making it worse
if you dig too deep
fill it back in with the truth
dig your hole but
don't step in it.

Last To Leave

   A golden charm
lights upon the flower
  milkweed is its lure

   finding this place
by compass sun
a flight of a million wings

   making their way
 to Mexico
   a journey of no return

this is the lone holdout
   a straggler
reluctant to leave

it sips the last of sweetness
  then finally flutters away
almost 2 weeks behind

A Celebration Of Life

Let us celebrate
this life

what a glorious thing
to have been given

hold life close
embrace it

do not be bitter
do not complain

enjoy its miracle
accept its longevity

the alternative
is even longer.

This Land

This lovely land
so blessed with warmth and sun
lies littered with its
store of stones
as if the land erupted
spewing forth
its natural glory.
sending beauty
into the air
and leaving us this path
to walk upon
limestone and juniper
embrace our way
renewing
our heart and soul.

Doctoring

We doctor ourselves
with Aspirin and Icy Hot
Advil and Aspercreme
the warmth feels good
on aging muscles and
old bones
the body complains
voices its neglect
with aches and pains
that come out of nowhere
the body gets grumpy
loses its elasticity
its ability
but the body also fights back
seems to always rebound
and come back around
given time

Raindrop

The drip of a raindrop
falls off the roof and
lands in the empty flower pot
each drop makes a plunk
like the sound of a frog
leaping from land
into water
the raindrop reverberates
sending out rings of mini waves
watery echoes
that create another world
a pond of thought
which in turn creates a poem
about rain
and pots
and sound.

Fire Ants & Emojis

Emojis
are getting out of hand
like fire ants
they pop up everywhere
mounds of them
piles in every e-mail.
they multiply
they spread
you can't get rid of them
there is no approved deterrent
I guess we will
just have to live with them
like Covid
like fire ants.

Morning Ghosts

Misty plumes
rise from the pond
so strange they scare almost

The atmosphere
compounds our fear
we imagine them as ghosts

Such spectral sights
our feet ignite
as we flee quickly by

Our sense says that
they are not real
our feet say otherwise.

Forgettng

To forget who you are
some say is regressing,
when you go downhill
it can be depressing,
but the truth of the matter,
with which you are wrestling,
considering who you are,
forgetfulness is more of a blessing!

Sea Dog

Tiptoeing in its fragile skin,
a white poodle
dips its toe into the gulf
it senses overwhelmed
it's hair curls up
the roar too much
not used to salty limbs

The poodle stares through salt-washed eyes
growls at the white-capped sea
then makes a beeline down the beach
to the comfort of the canopy.

SAVING DAYLIGHT

Can we really save daylight

if so where do we put it?

time flies they say
but where does it go?

if you lose time it is called laziness

old times are not forgotten
though some should be

if you are off your timing
you could hurt yourself

once upon a time
we did not have clocks

oddly enough
we then had more time

but ultimately

Change

It becomes
harder and harder
to adapt to change

our parents knew this
and tried to tell us
but we just laughed

we went on
thinking it would
never happen to us

still change occurred
and now we understand
how it was true

we should have listened
and prepared
but we thought we were immune

now change
has overtaken us
and w...

The Patient

She lies in bed
unable to lift herself
when she tries she moans in pain
they have to turn her
1,2,3 up and over
to the chair
every action
hurts her even more
what can she do
she is a prisoner
in a one room cell
before she did everything
all action, all motion
now just a warm body
to be shoveled into bed and
moved around like furniture
they medic...

Shutting Down

This time of year
plants take on a sickly look
they drop their leaves
they look sad
exhausted
ready to go to sleep
to hunker down for the winter
there is no need for water, food or sun
like patients in a sick bed
they subsist on very little
it is their time to rest
to build back their strength
to lay in beds
in silent sleep
until they wake again in Sp...

The Grass Is Always Greener

Everything we always wanted
lies on the other side,
no fence could hope to hold us
our envy not denied

The grass always seems greener
jealousy our common fate,
we want whatever we don't have
have no will to work and wait

We think others have it better
and cannot be convinced,
that what we have is just as good
and has earned permanence

As life...
