Thanks for all your time and trouble. I would truly agree with your assessment and I think it accords with my comment. A tricky area indeed - I failed the 11 plus but excelled and moved to a grammar school later - memory is an aid to accumulating facts which enable one to pass exams, but alas, I had/have a poor one.

Thanks Cynthia for liking On the Northern Line!
I noticed your profile picture is by Picasso, and I was reading an article about Sylvette David, his last muse in a magazine called The Oldie. Well worth a read. She has a current exhibition of her own paintings in Devon. Regards Ray

Some thoughts to keep.

I often think that use of the seasons as metaphors is a risky business, as it assumes all readers come from the same global climate belt, not to mention terrain. A bit like 'Christmas must have snow' or it isn't truly Christmas, an immature 'European' take on a magnificent concept that crossed the oceans imperialistically, and has been very selfishly distorted from a world viewpoint.

Hi Cynthia
Pleased you enjoyed 'Penalised'
I'm currently living in Scotland, and quickly have become tired of hearing Nicola Sturgeon whingeing about everything.
Penalised is a sort of follow-up to 'Nic' (2 poems back)
Reduced quantity of writing anything close to sensible dictates my reduction in post, but I hope you are fit and well, and maybe we'll bump into each other at some future event.

Hi Cynthia
Just to explain my brief comment : it was a knee jerk reaction to your equally terse comment of "no." following my plea for live poetry to be free of constraint and therefore not to be paid for. Obviously there is much more to the issue than I expressed, but I can sometimes go off at a tangent in my views and they may not coincide with the accepted norm. Such was the case here, but apparently you did not think it worthy of expanding on hence the "slap on the wrist."
I could have waxed on about it, but like you I have other demands on me . I hope there is a truce now!!

regards, Ray.

wow. i love it! sensual is one word. i love the power you have given her, making mince out of reasoned philosophies is so clever, imbuing the absinthe and the woman with the same strength. the use of obscenity works perfectly, transforming the word into something warm and sexual. brilliant. my wife will love it too, i'll let you know what she thinks. baby two is due valentines day but emma is already massive! its not twins though, must just take after his/her daddy.

Re The Astronomer Hi Cynthia it's a re-edit but l have been having trouble for 9 months or so. I have been editing work using the in-house programming language. It has been murder. I've been in touch with the organisers but l still have to hand type the programme eg:
this is an example
and so on for each separate line. :-(

Howdy Cynth :)

Ha, well I have a confession to make. Although I've been a total music anorak for almost all my life, I never really 'got' classical. It wasn't around me, I never listened to it, and the only time I did it was coming in or out of assembly in primary school.

So hearing Finlandia had a massive effect on me. Not only did it sound EXACTLY how I was feeling, it was also the first real bit of classical music I had ever liked. It's kickstarted a total obsession btw - I am listening to classical AND Finlandia itself all the time now!

Your deal sounds ace btw :D

Hi Cynthia Thanks for lovely coment on my Bruegel poem. It's a piece that has caused me endless problems over the years. I've been trying to sort it out for a new selection of my poems. The version here has had radical surgery, but after the comment of some of my poetry friends I am moving back closer to the original which has 4 X 6 line stanzas, but still hopefully sorting out some bits that weren't quite right. I'm glad that you like it. I often worry that it is the kind of thing that doesn't have much appeal these days!

I'm coming back to you on your comment on Clippie. First of all its very gratifying to receive input from the fair sex, as it is a rarity and nice to know it has not been interpreted from a "feminist" perspective. I have not only the photo, but the paraphernalia that clipped the tickets and the rack! She seemed so fresh faced that time just disappeared in the interim.
Regarding the wider issue of mathematics, I feel it that the esoteric side of it should be more widely acknowledged, as it would humanize the subject and include the more far reaching consequences of a love of form and our utilization of it. There is nothing weird about science, but maybe more research should be done to broaden it out. The future is there to do it, so lets hurry up while we have time!!
The Kabbalah was adopted by the Jewish faith long before Christianity as far as I know. (The tree of life is worth checking out). Regards, Ray.

Hey Cynthia,
Thanks so much for your comment :) I have the singular ability to ignore butt hurt comments. My piece was directed more at myself than anyone here. However, it's not to say how utterly boring I find the works of those who are so intent on form, style, designated names that their work is no longer natural, pleasing or free flowing. Quite like the chef who measures agonizingly from the cookbook and creates a dish with something valid missing: taste.

Texture so silky smooth
black satin was good
soon to be replaced
because we just kept
slipping and sliding off
plus a slight injury
bruised my little head.

I agree she is gorgeous.

Hi Cynthia,

I can't thank you enough for your comments on 'The Has-Been Poet' and indeed others that you have commented on.

I was blown away by what you said and it means more to me than it probably should.

Perhaps my work is not current enough for some readers but I am drawn to formal stuff and I want to write it in a modern way, knowing only too well that not all will like it.

The fact that you do makes me more than pleased.

Thanks again x
