Nicky, this is just plain spooky! I was thinking of you on the weekend, and told myself: Find a few minutes to contact Nichola just in case she still pops onsite occasionally. I am fine generally; had a close call with an appendectomy in late January but recovered remarkably, and am still spitting fireballs at everybody - about everything (just spitball-size - no dragon stuff). How are you doing with your enlarged family? Your work will be so welcome when you are able to share with us again. Never give up jotting things down, even on envelopes. Just keep them jammed in a clear plastic bag if necessary, for future reference; they will be valuable fodder for your skill. Enough from me. Love always.
Cynthia
P.S. I love the picture too. What do you think - a coveted persona? Like so many of us women? Interesting thought!

Thanks Greg. It does seem a world away in terms of its innocence, doesn't it? I remember going to London on the train several times with my mates to go to Waterloo or Paddington to see those "foreign" regions. 13 years old and going to London on our own? These days you daren't let you kids go to school on their own till they're 21!

Hi Anthony, Re your comment on Portrait of a woman. Constructive comments are so welcome and I agree with this one. Struggled to fathom a better line and came up with "Through your century of frost" but still not sure about it. Thx, Win x

Isobel, thanks for your comments on November (which should actually be October) 1966. It's only nine lines, I know, but it was meant to be also about how pop songs can fasten a moment in your memory (although perhaps not well enough that you can remember the right month). I was playing the Four Tops out in the garage while doing the ironing when I thought of it, having rediscovered my old vinyl singles at the back of a cupboard. Football, like religion, and possibly pop music, is the opium of the people, of course. Indeed, for many, football is a replacement for religion, involving the same senses of obligations, loyalty and duty, blind faith and hope. Yes, faith, hope - but not always too much charity!

Hi Cynthia
You've a brilliant eye for detail I applaud you. I should explain that the poems I post on here are the first drafts and sometimes when I'm distilling the poems I repeat an image. I've changed the latex line in Pearls as I wanted the bones to the poem so later I could flesh it out. Editing is a huge russian doll of which I'm constantly unlayering.
Your comments are always brilliant.

Hi Greg
I only started supporting Everton in Autumn 1983 when my son decided he wanted to. Things were dismal then - it was before the great days of the mid 80s.
The game I particularly remember is the last of the 1987 season when we already had the title in the bag, beating Tottenham 1-0. The atmosphere in the stadium was fairly flat considering the achievement. You could cut the complacency with a knife - a lesson if there ever was one about sitting on your laurels in a competitive context.

There's memory for you! I had a sneaking feeling I had the wrong month. What about you? Have you got one game that sticks out, when everything seemed aligned, somehow? I think it's got to be when you were a kid, before you realised there were other things in life. And I don't fancy our chances at Goodison: it's just lucky the title isn't resting on it!

Thanks for taking the trouble to comment on the November 1966 fragment, Ann, even though you're a not a football fan! I think great pop records help to frame a moment, and if it wasn't for the song I don't think I would remember it. (I guess you could extend the poem and turn it into something else. I've just Googled and discovered it was the month that John and Yoko first met).

'Are you sure you just didn't want to get 'somnambulant' out of your poetical 'system' where it's been buzzing around for ages? :)' - you might well be right there!
That, and I've been lacking in sleep the last few months, it feels as if I live my life in 'somnabulance'.
