thanks for the comments on 'Down In The Hole' Harry - you raise some good questions and I, like many others, don't have the answers. I think there is a 'new' industrial revolution in the electronics and power industry - and this has pushed honest hard working industry out - that's not necessarily a bad thing I suppose - but I rail at the way it was done with the mines and steel (and the docks to some extent) these were community industries with little to replace them when they were demolished. I really appreciate your continued support and comments Harry
thanks very much
Ian

thanks for commenting on 'Down In The Hole' Ray - yes - a lot of the story is based on family and friends who did work down the pit and were affected by Thatcher's disregard for community in her pursuit of unsound economics. I lived right at the centre of the Yorkshire coal fields and a lot of my friends and relatives worked the mines. Thankfully my parents pushed me so that I didn't have to - and I'm thankful for it

thanks again for the kind comments on 'Down In The Hole' Cynthia - thankfully my parents took the view 'no son of mine will work down the pit' although a lot of my friends and relatives did - so it's part false persona and partly a homage to some of the stories they told me. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment - cheers
Ian
PS - just noticed you also commented on 'Forsaking Auld Lan Syne' I really must visit these pages more - I'm blooming hopeless - thanks once again for these additional nice comments

aythangyow Ray - I will take a gander on the i-diddly-i-player when I get a quiet few mo's - thanks for the heads up.
I remember as a child I used to get very excited when a particular female singer came on stage and sang Sweet Georgia Brown. Bizarre but true. And later in life I worked on the stage door at the Grand Theatre and occasionally ran errands to the Leeds City Varieties although I never actually got to see any performances there. Altogether now:
Come, come, come and make eyes at me
Down at the Old Bull and Bush
Laa la la la la....
I fear some of our international readers will not have a clue what we're talking about Ray!

Hi myescape,
The first 5 are my early work, excluding Ink which was the first bit of writing I've done in the current years. It's also one which I'm happiest with, you should check it out and let me know what you think.
Thanks for taking the time to read them!

Hi Steve , thanks so much for going forward on the technical issue for me. I do take the point about the certificate thing being on my computer. It is a random thing, and seems to home in on WOL only by law of averages. I use the site more than any other; funnily enough it also happened on a youtube link from an email last night. Apparently it might an adware thing. I'll keep my eye on it and won't let it deter me !
regards Ray

hello Ralfy! and welcome to WoL. So glad you liked my sample poem and very generous of you to say so. Your writing is intriguing and I look forward to reading more. I would suggest just post one or two poems a day (or less) rather than be tempted to swamp the site with a whole ton of work. It's just they tend to get gobbled up by the system and it's harder for people to notice them. Lots of excellent writers here on WoL and it's a great place to learn if you take the time to interact and read what's out there.
all the best

Hi Martin,
Fabulous poems as ever last night, well done.
I had to write and say Kate Tempest - wow! Thank-you so much for pointing me in her direction. I'm watching her perform at The Royal Court and am blown away.
Yet again I'm reminded of how high the bar is!

I struggled with this month's theme "Hangover", but I'm looking forward to hear everyone else's interpretations tonight.
Jenny is braving it and coming back for another session, so we must have done something right last time!

Paul, thanks for reading this.
The detachment comes more from the clinical almost pasteurised way in which cremations are conducted and the inevitable way that public grieving is seen as a consequence of the scene.

Hi Cynthia - well good for you! Thanks for remembering our chat on this and for updating me which was very thoughtful and appreciated. I've always held that poetry should be adaptable and this has proved that point. To flip the coin, I have sometimes read lines and immediately thought Noooooo that sounds terrible! Or a piece has fallen flat on its poetic arse with the wrong crowd. Or I have changed my choice of poem to read at the very last minute. Have to admit I have dropped performing these last few months. Maybe I will feel the need sometime again in the future. All the best, Colin

I sensed Zen Hazel. I feel connected. Namaste.
Only yesterday I finished a little book on Mindfulness by Anna Black -- filled with beautiful, bite-sized practices.
I have watched Tara Brach before. I feel drawn towards her and her belief in radical acceptance is rather endearing.
When she mentions the 'awakening heart' my mind delves deep into my earlier classes on kundalini yoga where we worked on the awakening of the sleeping serpent within us (mula badha).
My journey continues Hazel and I'm in the final stages of completing my first book on managing smoking addiction through staying in the "now" and watching the cravings come and go. Wonderful.
I'm keen to know more about your mental health charity, MBSR and MBCT.
Love&Light

Hi Raj, I've been doing some kind of meditation with different degrees of commitment since I was 16. Then I lived in Nepal for a couple of years working as a volunteer and was surrounded by functioning Buddhist monasteries. I did a vipassana retreat and that started my mindfulness practice. When I came home I became involved with the Mindfulness Association at Samye Ling in Scotland and did the MBSR at Bangor University. I'm addicted to Tara Brach podcasts and videos. I am part of a local buddhist sangha but don't consider myself to be a practising buddhist. I'm lucky enough to teach secular mindfulness as part of my job with a mental health charity - so that anchors me at work and helps to wake me out of the trance. The difficult colleague in my poem was from a previous job - I still think of her with a mixture of love, amusement and sheer fear!

Hi Hazel, my mother has that picture up in her kitchen and it reminded me of myself in old photos, although that kid would be a few years older than me. I was born in in 1953. Anyway, I posted it as a taster from my next book After Hours out in April from Cultured Llama.

Hello Josie,
I've not read anything here on WOL that matches the starkness of your work. I hesitate to say I like it because plainly what you describe, i'm guessing, is acute frustration born of mental pain, and there's little to like in such a situation. That said, you compose your pieces beautifully, and you can certainly write. I hope you get your $900.
Travis.

Hi Paul, firstly thankyou for your kind comments on 'the little voice', ive never had the nerve to let others read my writing and positive feedback is very rewarding! I have read some of your work and particularly enjoyed 'nostalgia' I like being able to see different perspectives from seemingly innoccuos objects. I think you might enjoy my poem 'ink' as I feel there are some similarities.
