What's Good About Old Age

is that your eyesight goes

which means you don't see all the things

deteriorating around you

you don't see the dirt and dust

the things that need fixing

the cobwebs

Another good thing is

you don't hear too good either

which means you don't pick up on

all the ugly things being said on TV

and you can also use the excuse

I didn't hear you

to get out of work

or out of trouble

the next good thing about old age

is that your sense of smell goes

and you can't smell all the bad odors

that come out of people or pets

and you can just ignore the smell

and act like it wasn't you

the last good thing about old age

is your mind

which stubbornly hangs on

as it watches the rest of you go downhill

it's the last resort of what was your former self

if it wasn't for it

you would just be a bunch of bones

propped up in a corner

with your mind still functioning

they can't pull the plug unless

they sign a statement and

people are reluctant to do that

they don't want the blame or the liability

and that's the best good thing.

Fact-flavoured and funny - an irresistible combination.
I'm already in my dotage and can testify to some of the content.
But the pleasure of a solitary physical existence comes from not
having to suffer constant reminders from the company of others
who visibly display the signs and symptoms you can ignore in
yourself ! ?

d.k.,

a poem which one must assume is written from personal experience. Every word is true and I say this as I approach my own dotage.

Well said and thank you

Keith
