Uchtryd's Summer Place

In Mariamné's time

What trees would have grown so tall

What was there beyond the garden wall?

When she walked beyond the garden gate

Did she see the river's sudden spate

And did the rustle of a summer breeze

Mask the red kite's call above those trees

And did she hear the Spring birds' calls

Above the echo of Ystwyth's falls

Did she stroll her father's ways

And let their beauty so amaze,

Enjoy the vistas and natural views

Whispering to her inner muse -

Or did she stay within the plot

Safe gardening on its level motte?

Did the picturesque delight

Or did dark distant hills affright

In Mariamné's time

Hi 'Fish'
Mariamne was the much loved daughter of the family who died in her 20s - her father had a statue commissioned in the church but a subsequent fire damaged it badly. She was a keen botanist and there is a garden in the Hafod Uchtryd estate which used to be called Mariamne's Garden, but the web site now has it as Mrs Johnnes' Garden. Hafod means 'summer place'. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Chris - Good read. I've found something on Uchtryd's Summer Place (a part of Wales I once walked) but who is Mariamé?
Go well
