Etiquette

Etiquette

Casual dress has given way to casual behaviour

etiquette and fashion are glimpses of the past

Manners maketh man was the command

to which all were bound to obey

It came naturally, almost second nature

as gentlemen doffed their hats

Gloves removed before shaking hands

gentlemen walking close to the kerb when escorting a lady

Gentlemen standing when a lady entered a room

seats offered to ladies and the elderly on public transport

May I, preceeded almost every request

espressions - I beg your pardon or after you

Gentlemen opening doors for ladies who went in or out first

Please and thank you automatically recited

all adults addressed as Mr or Mrs

Teachers as Sir or Maám

All has been abandoned in favour of nothing.

a vacuum now exists

Manners are unnoticed or seen as quaint

Slovenly behaviour bereft of respect is in vogue

mutual respect or even self respect a thing of the past

now irrelevant

Occasionally I see an instance of etiquette

which gladdens my heart, mostly from the elderly

Nostalgia plays a long symphony

which has now degenerated into

the sound of a thumping drum

◄ Forgotten forever

I live in a small town that time forgot - doors are often held open for me, and on two occasion when I was stuck on a crossing 'refuge' with lorries wizzing past me and panic begining to take over, drivers have actually stopped, holding every one up while I slowly crossed the road.

I felt valued as an 'old person' and this is how it should be everywhere.

Thoughtful good manners make such a difference to someone elses day.

Yes Mr Alexander, Mr Maryon
And yes Mr Matthews, you too
I do regret the passing of these values
We were brought up on, all trained to do ?

... a vacuum presided over by the vacuous! To me, this lack of manners mirrors a lack of respect and me-me-me attitudes. I for one regret the passing of such values.

I'm reminded of the old schollboy joke - Shutup and Manners were doing something they shouldn't have been doing when the school caretaker appeared. Manners immediately hid in a dustbin.

'What's your name?' asked the caretaker.

'Shutup' came the reply.

'Where's your manners boy?'

'In the dustbin'

I do however agree with your sentiments Mr. Jeffries. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening. (No-one can accuse me of reduced standards!)

Wot's this stuff you talkin' 'bout?
Doff me hat to a chick?
I don't even know what this strange word means?
I dunno wot's makin' you tick

I know precisely what you're talking 'bout Keith
It makes me very sad
To see where modern society's fallen to
(Manners? What are they?......) ?
