A Day in 100 Thoughts

10th October 2018

The radio speaks, it's daylight, I'm wakened

A momentary pause: consciousness beckoned

Sunlight on the trees says late Autumn Summer

More news on Brexit and the policy's dumber

The bins must be put out for the lorry

I had better get up, it's late and I'm sorry

There's news of a flood and a broke coffee chain

I'll email a poem to friends up the lane

I'll respond to a comment with an answer of sorts

I'll start on a poem on one hundred thoughts

I wonder if a friend's read my book's second draft

Perhaps it so bad he wept or he laughed!

The sun in the garden looks lovely and warm

I shouldn't be typing indoors but that's the norm!

Glad I cut the grass yesterday but I could have done it now

I really must start packing - once again, that vow

Time for an espresso, I'm off for a shot

Then I'd better sort out the badminton lot

The membership form needs addresses

I can't fill it in with my silly guesses

More work on club night

to get all their details right!

Time to put my lunch in the oven

Then I'll sort out my bees in their coven

Meanwhile, while I wait for my fishcakes to cook

I'll rewrite a paragraph of my book:

Lots of thoughts on my time in university

Count that as one for this epic of mental diversity!

Enjoying my cod fishcake and lemony pud

The orange squash is too weak for this tasty food

Now washing the dishes in the sink

I plan how I'll change the hive structures in sync

Warm in the afternoon sun

as I raise the queen excluder in hive one

And the same in hive two - they're quiet in the air

can I feed them some syrup without drowning that pair?

I remember to update my hive data

And think that I'll top up the food later

Now my thoughts on this poem are fraught

             - I'll never reach my one hundredth thought

I think I am flagging

             - but that counts, I'll do it - no bragging

Shall I go back to my writing

             - as this isn't exciting?

I am not sure on that paragraph, it just will not fly

What's this on the screen!? An unexplained refund - I guess no supply

             of a perspex crown board

So... hunt for another supplier assured

Is it time for a cup of tea?

My writing is still all at sea!

Too early for tea

Where else can I be?

There are jobs in the greenhouse outside

I see a late fig - and another - you can't hide!

Must dig up that bulb to plant in a pot

Next year it will do better (or not!)

And as I come out I remember the bin

from the roadside still to come in

The sun is still warm as I walk to the road

And as I return with my much lighter load

I see that the bin men left a compost sack

Next week in the recyclables they'll get it back

Tea and a flapjack with Countdown

less amusing than usual: I frown!

Time to get ready for badminton's rave

I'll take the membership data we have

From the top of a hill I wonder at flashing lights ahead, near a bend

And when I arrive there's a hedge cutting tractor's front end

half blocking the road that's my way

blinding headlights not making my day!

But I'm early as usual, the only one here

Then here's Dave - two more need to appear

to make up a foursome for doubles

(Like I need that rhyme to add to my troubles!)

It's later, the third game, and my playing is poor

I'm missing shots all over the floor

Fourth game and back with my first pairing

If I go on like this there will be some bad swearing

We've played for an hour and there's still time to spare

But one of our crowd is tired so we stop for some air

Back home early for a shower and a meal

The usual I think: cheese, pickle and figs are the deal

I must get some crisps for a change

I remember I liked that chilli snacks range

What to watch on the box?

             Something recorded from stocks

After Grand Designs on a couple who build

A house clad in zinc in sloping farm field

There's a comedy series that seems set to bore

The other channels don't have a lot more

So there's nothing worth watching on next

I mean nothing that interests - I'm vexed

Whoops! I snoozed for a moment - but I'll rewind

Technology means that I don't have to mind

the occasional doze while watching a show

But why I sleep at the best bits - I'll never know

Too early for bed, I'll have a small coffee

And watch something else with a chocolate toffee

What can I find

To wake up my mind

As the evening passes me by, I stray

To the series I wanted to watch while away

It's a thriller that I think will keep me awake

for an hour, 'til it's time to make

my way up to bed, but first check for a message at large

And put my iPhone and Fitbit on to charge

Remembering to check that I've turned off the light

I open the door and look at the stars burning bright

Clean my teeth, wash my face and undress

Light off, step into bed, pick up my Kindle and press

to see the book that I already owned on the screen!

Annoying, but I'll read it awhile: as the story is seen

It comes back to me all too well and I know

             what happens next and so

Should I move on to the sequel I bought

At the same time because I'd read them in order then I thought?

Now everyone knows at last

What an ordinary, boring day I just passed!
