NO GOING BACK

The wheel of misfortune keeps on turning,

a hole in his pocket is rapidly burning.

Hope is raging like a bull,

the jaunty screen calling him back:

"Place your bets now, place your bets."

Somewhere in a far off dream

fortunes are waiting to be made,

a four pack helps it on its way,

his wife is missing, the bed unmade.

Still he awaits the grand parade.

Hi Brian. You could argue theft by deception or rather seduction, and they did make it up, or rather refine it!

Thanks Suki. I do stray along semi lyric lines sometimes - Johnny Cash indeed , wow!

Darren, like you I a betting virgin ; my band started a whip round when the lottery first came out. I declined (no receipts and little trust, plus the long odds). I thought twice with that word substitute, but there we go.

Hi Mark. Thanks for that info. You must recall how originally betting was illegal but the law was got around to serve the need. Life is like that!

Glad you liked it, David, Anya and Col!

Thanks all. Ray

The gambling lure is well defined and it's easy to forget the
variety of ways offered today .
I liked a £1 E/W bet on horses with attractive odds if
the form was there no matter how distant it might have been on the day. Trainers like their bets as well! The shop counter displayed leaflets on gambling and advice about
coping with its obsession. But a fool is a fool - whether in the bookies or elsewhere and it was hard to miss them
spouting reasons to all and sundry why their choice had failed to do the business.

Nice one Ray - I have only ever placed one bet, it came in. Never again, before the result I was giving myself a hard time about wasting my money.....

Love the line: Hope is raging like a bull.

If his wife were still there, then perhaps the typo ‘home’ would also have worked.

Hi Ray,

I could imagine the Man in Black, Johnny Cash singing this one. Great poem, but also a great lyric too!

Sorry guys, typo error - should be hope instead of home!

The big betting companies picking the pockets of those who cannot afford it. You couldn't make it up!
