Why Does it Have to be So?

Why did we have to connect?

Was it because it was genuine?

Is there really any chemistry?

Or did you like me out of respect?

Why do I have these thoughts

that haunt me and won’t go away?

Is it that I am fantasising?

Misinterpreting the things you say?

Why in an ideal world

Would there be no me and you

Because of the difference in age

Being together would be taboo

Why after all these years

do I feel the way I do?

I never dreamed in a million years

I could have feelings for a girl like you

Although the fact remains

that our connection can never grow

I’m still asking myself why?

Why does it have to be so?

Why?  Because love can be cruel

Like the poem Fred.

I agree with Keith and would add - if it is meant to be then stuff everyone else!

Young girls do get attracted to older men for various reasons, seldom the sort of love they would feel towards someone of their own age. In an older man they can see success, power, intelligence, wealth etc and see them as a father figure, particularly when they have missed this in their home lives.

Remember Caroline Aherne as Mrs Merton interviewing Debbie McGee? "Debbie McGee...what first attracted you to millionaire Paul Daniels"

Hi Keith,

Yes you are correct and I feel when we get older it gets more confusing. In my case it’s because I still feel 18 in my head which comes out in my personality, but that’s it, because I’m classed as ‘old’. Really appreciate your kind comments. Cheers

Hello Fred,

This poem is a cry from the heart which cannot comprehend the complexities of life with all its conventions. That which should be unimportant stands in the way of love. The last line says it all. Do you believe that love can overcome all? I do.
Thank you for such a sensitive piece of writing.
Keith
