War Games

War Games

As boys we played in and around

disused air raid shelters

where others had once found refuge

from the terror of the skies

Together we re enacted the war

British and Germans in deadly conflict

for us it was fun, having listened to

and inspired by our parents wartime reminices

Adolesence propelled us into adulthood

into a time of peace and prosperity

The war and our games receeded

into a past of childhood fantasies and memories

I soon awoke to the reality of liffe

war is ever present but then I

discovered love, passion and sex

My emotions were on a collision course

I failed to make sense of life

I stumbled along, I found solace in conformity

comfort in belief

love something sought after

Now I am old, past my allotted time

and little has changed

except for love

These words should find many nodding in recognition -
especially those of the immediate post-WW2 generation.
.......................
Having read them, the following occurs to me:
There's this to say about love and war,
They both seek to change what went before.
Both often serve to put us to the test,
But too often what follows is not for the best.

Keith - there will always be love. Sadly it seems inevitable there will also always be war. Keep your chin up!
