Barry Norman R.I.P

entry picture

In days of old long before our broadband digital Wi-Fi age

Three channels on the tv and suddenly colour all the rage

Watching a film on the silver screen across the nation

Was a treat that needed very careful consideration?

A late night slot on the BBC was the place for those in the know

To get the update and critical acclaim Film was the show

A hombre by the name of Barry Norman presented

This dude knew his subject matter and couldn’t be resented

If he was interviewing a big star who on his show was a guest

He was never in awe and asked questions with abandon no contest

The finale has come for him and time is no longer on his side

But his movie light will shine forever on far and wide

His legacy charm and wit will live on and he won’t be forgot

R.I.P. Barry Norman – “And why not” ?

Hi M.C. - He was definitely a maverick and his replacements, the like of Jonathon Ross, Claudia Winkleman, Mark Kermode have failed to emulate him. Thanks for feedback.

For many - including me - he WAS "Film Night". Smooth,
urbane and communicative, he was the son of a noted
cinema name Leslie Norman -and it showed.
On a personal level, we once crossed swords via correspondence about my concern that violence in films
encouraged copy-cat behaviour in some. He wouldn't
agree - perhaps defending the medium on his own terms - and we agreed to differ. But he's never been equalled, let
alone bettered as a presenter of and ambassador for film.
